INEC Meets ASUU On Friday, Considers Recalling Ex-Corps Members For Election Duty Following the failure of the federal government to find a lasting solution to the lingering strike by public university lecturers, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has decided to hold a consultative meeting with the lecturers’ union, the Academic Staff Union if Nigerian Universities (ASUU) on January 4, ahead of the 2019 polls, Akelicious has learnt. The meeting, according to the electoral body, will be limited to the involvement of their members in the 2019 general elections. ASUU had last month embarked on industrial action to protest the poor funding of Nigerian universities and alleged plan by the federal government to increase students’ fees and introduce an education bank. But INEC had raised the alarm that the lingering ASUU strike would no doubt have serious impact on the preparations for the conduct of the 2019 elections. “They are one critical resour

‘Name Federal University of Tecnology Akure after Shagari ’ Alhaji Shehu Shagari I was very saddened when I learnt of the departure of Former President and Commander-In-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Usman. Our departed former President who had the rare opportunity of ruling Nigeria during the Second Republic, was indeed a man of honour, dignity and character. He was a very considerate, accessible, objective, selfless and kind man. I had the rare privilege of meeting him when I was a Counsel to the Federal Government in Justices Ayo Irikefe enquiry into an alleged 2.8 billion pounds diverted from the central bank of England into a private account in Midland Bank in England. What stands this epitome of decency and integrity out is his vaunting patriotism, open door policy, simplicity, humility and his love for education. The people of old Ondo State which included the present Ekiti State will forever remain grateful to the depa

Why Marriage Really Scares Me - TV Personality, Uti Nwachukwu Confesses Actor, TV presenter and model, Uti Nwachukwu, speaks to JOY MARCUS on his career, marriage and other issues How did you come into the entertainment industry? As a Big Brother Africa star, a lot of doors were opened to me. Inasmuch as I didn’t win the BBA 3, it still gave me leverage in the entertainment industry. I have not always had interest in acting because my first love was music; so, I always wanted to be a music star. Acting and hosting events came naturally to me, and I was doing it while in school. As for acting, I used to mimic a lot of people and my friends told me that I should become an actor. What was your parent’s reaction when you told them about BBA ? I didn’t tell them; I only told my sisters. When I got back from the competition, they were proud of me but they said my dad was shocked. I made them happy though I was evicted the first time. Sadly, when I won the BBA

2019: Jonathan speaks on bribing APC guber running mate, Hamzat with $5m Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reacted to claim that he offered $5m bribe to the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship running mate in Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat in 2015. Jonathan said Hamzat was a politician desperately looking for votes, hence should be ignored. In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Ikechukwu Eze, on Sunday in Abuja, the former president stated that Hamzat was unknown to him. Jonathan said “in the first place this character is an obscure individual who in 2015 had neither a recognizable name nor political clout.” The statement reads: “There is no better way to respond to this frivolous claim than to quickly dismiss it as a blatant lie apparently concocted by a wannabe politician desperate for votes in a campaign season. “The point has to be clearly made that former President Jonathan has never met this man who was obviously not relevant in the nation

Boko Haram: 100,000 people purportedly flee Borno to Chad republic Following series of attacks by terrorists across Borno state in Nigeria’s northeast, over one hundred thousand people are said to have crossed over to Chad republic, claiming that they have no hope remaining in that part of the country. Malam Shuibu Isa, one of the people who are part of the movement, told newsmen on phone that there was no sincerity in the Nigeria military’s claims regarding the fight against insurgents in the northeast. “We are tired of reporting issues to the military because they are not doing anything about it. Before the attack in Baga, we have reported on the impending attacks but nothing was done even when we see the Boko Haram fighters gathering,” he said. Already hundreds of residents from the northern part of Borno state have fled their homes and return to Maiduguri with already new registration of 2,400 IDPs at the teachers’ village IDPs camp along Pompomari ward in

At last, Trump shoots straight  [ Update Vanguard ] By Owei Lakemfa AMERICAN President, Donald Trump was four when the Korean War broke out in 1950. In three years, the war sucked in more than 40 countries, most, under the United Nations, UN, banner. Two and a half million people died in the war. America suffered 36,568 dead and  103,284 injured. All the countries returned home except America which today, maintains 23,468 combatants in Korea. This is 68 years later. TRUMP Beyond the trip to Maiduguri This might have informed  Trump’s thinking when on December 19  he announced  his administration is pulling out American troops from Syria. He did a second  announcement next day, that he is recalling half of the 14,000 American troops in Afghanistan, with the hint of disentangling his country from that country. Seen as a war monger with a fixation for the gun and a commitment to promoting arms sales locally and internationally, Trump’s announcement shocked

2019: A Profile of the X-factors [ Update Vanguard ] By Azu Ishiekwene THE general elections in 50 days will be different from previous ones in nearly two decades in many ways. Money is one way. At this time in a “normal” election cycle, politicians would be in a rat race to outspend one another. After four years of largely empty promises, they suddenly discover that they need to return to voters who wait in ambush on empty tanks, knowing that it would be another four years before this cycle repeats itself. It’s a bizarre ritual of mutual extortion. At a point, it didn’t look like it would be different this time. For example, the hefty cost of nomination forms by the two leading parties – the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party; the dollar bazaar at the PDP convention in Port Harcourt; and the estimated N26billion shelled out by PDP and APC for the governorship election in Osun State, suggested that the stage was set, once aga

BADAGRY-EXPRESSWAY: A gateway of pain, anguish [ Update Vanguard ] By Dayo Johnson THE Lagos-Badagry Expressway is usually described as a “Gateway to Nigeria’ because it is a major access into the country from neighbouring states in the West coast of Africa. In the last two decades, plying this all important route, in its terrible state, had become associated with anguish and pain for road users, including visitors from neighbouring countries. An accident scene at a bad portion of the road It was therefore good news when Lagos State Government in 2009 embarked on extensive reconstruction of the road from four lanes to 10 lanes, including Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) lane and new mass transit light rail line in the median. The road expansion project, initially meant to be completed within three years, has, however, stretched far beyond that date, creating more sufferings and causing unbearable gridlocks for road users. Commuters and motorists told th

Transport union members clash at Ojota park Anti-riot policemen and an Armoured Personnel Carrier have been stationed to restore peace at Ojota Motor Park in Lagos following bloody clash by transport union members on Thursday evening. Sources told the News Agency of Nigeria that a suspended factional leader of a transport Union allegedly attacked the motorpark with hoodlums on Thursday to reclaim the facility. NAN gathered that there was a free-for-all as members loyal to the leadership of the park tried to defend the park from the intruders with machetes, bottles and other weapons. “The clash started Thursday evening at about 6.30pm, many vehicles were leaving the park hurriedly and gunshots were fired into the air and everyone scampered for safety. “That resulted in the deployment of police personnel from different divisions under Area H, including anti-riot police officers by the Area Commander, ACP Miller Dantawaye,” a source said. When NAN visited the park at
