Just in: Zenith Bank appoints new MD

Zenith Bank has appointed Mr Ebenezer Onyeagwu as it new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. File: Zenith Bank  The bank disclosed this in a notice to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Monday. It, however, said the appointment was subject to the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and would become effective from June 1. In the notice, Onyeagwu will replace Mr Peter Amangbo, whose tenure will expire on May 31, 2019. Onyeagwu has been Zenith Bank’s Deputy Managing Director since October 2016 and has spent 17 years working with the bank. The bank said that the appointment was consistent with its tradition and succession strategy of grooming leaders from within. Onyeagwu, who is a graduate of accounting from Auchi Polytechnic, began his career at the defunct Financial Merchant Bank in 1991 and later held several management positions in the erstwhile Citizens International Bank Limited until 2002 when he joined Zenith Bank. Police arrest suspects over death of 3 in Rivers cult clash

The Police Command in Rivers on Monday said some suspected cultists had been arrested in connection with the death of three persons in Mgbodohia, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state. The command’s spokesman, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP), confirmed the arrest to newsmen in Port Harcourt. Omoni, however, could not give a specific figure of the arrested suspects. He said that the three persons were killed on Saturday during a fight for supremacy between two rival cult groups – Iceland and Deybam in the community. The police spokesman said that preliminary investigation into the clash had shown that the fight resulted from disagreement over who should collect a certain illegal levy in the community. A sudden fire breakout occurred earlier today at the arrival section of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State. The inferno sent travelers scampering for safety. According to a report by Punch newspaper, the fire affected the arrival department where renovation work was being carried out, but that the outbreak itself was contained by the fire service after nearly an hour. He said, “It happened at the arrival department of the airport where the authority was carrying out renovation work. “It would have caused bigger havoc but for the arrival of men of the fire service. “It started around 2:10 pm and raged for 50 minutes. It damaged equipment and infrastructure, but the rescue work assisted in salvaging the situation.” The cause of the fire was not known as at the time of filing this report but a source at the Airport said that there was an on-going renovation at the arrival hall, which was totally razed. A father has done a remarkable act after successfully rescuing his family from the hands of dreaded kidnappers. Face of the alleged kidnapper A Nigerian dad has become the toast of town after he chased some kidnappers who abducted his wife and sons in Lekki, Lagos. The dad with the Instagram username Ideal Gold, said his wife and two sons were abducted along Orchid Road as they were on their way from a  crusade. A vehicle carrying 5 people was involved in an accident at Lurubuko along the Namanga-Amboseli road at the border of Kenya-Tanzania. According to one of the occupants,  Boniface Mwangi, the vehicle skidded on loose gravel, lost control and flipped. “The car lost control, we got off the road, cleared bushes and then the car flipped. When all that very scary experience stopped, all five of us were still belted and in our seats, upside down. Safety belts are lifesavers. Nipsey Hussle’s funeral to take place on Thursday at `The Staples Centre’

The public memorial service for the late Slain rapper, Nipsey Hussle will be held at Staples Centre on Thursday. His family reportedly chose the 21,000 seat venue to accommodate a massive crowd that will be attending. The Los Angeles rapper, whose real name was Ermias Davidson Asghedom was one of three men shot outside his clothing store in the Hyde Park neighbourhood of LA. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other two men are in stable condition. A 29-year-old suspect, Eric Holder, who allegedly carried out the fatally shooting on Hussle has been arrested. Holder is currently being held in solitary confinement, where he would be all alone and would not be allowed to mingle with the general population because they believed he is a target. FG Signs $523,823 TA agreement with Islamic Devt Bank

The federal government has signed a $523,823 (N185, 957,165 million) Technical Assistant (TA) Agreement grant with the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB) Group, in Marrakesh, Morocco. Rabiu, 26, dragged Jalingo to the court, alleging that she had defamed her on social media. “I want this honourable court to get me justice,”Rabiu, who resides at NDA barracks in Kaduna, prayed the court The judge Malam Dahiru Lawal, after remanding Jalingo, ordered the complainant to produce witnesses. Lawal also ordered the defendant to produce a reliable surety, saying that the offence, character defamation contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Sharia Penal Code (SPC). FG declares emergency on public health

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has declared a state of public health concern on maternal newborn and child death occurring at the primary health centres. Similar declaration is expected in states in the next few days to track maternal and child mortality. Nigeria has one of the worst records in maternal and child mortality in the world. It is recorded that in Nigeria approximately 145 women under the age of 15-45 die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth while 2300 children under five years old die mainly from preventable causes. Consequently, the agency said it will establish a national coordination centre within the agency to provide oversight on the outlined activities. Baby Born With Two Heads, One Heart, Two Spines In Egypt

A woman delivered a baby with two heads in the Egyptian Governorate of Aswan, according to Al Watan newspaper. The 25-year-old mother gave birth to the boy with two heads and one heart in a private clinic, said Ehab Hanafi, a representative from the Ministry of Health in Aswan. The newborn was transferred to a hospital to follow-up on his health condition. Hanafi stated that this is an extremely rare case because the baby was born with two spines, one heart and an intestine. An official confirmed that the baby is stable and will be transferred after a couple of days to the National Research Center in Cairo to monitor his condition.
