Atletico president Cerezo 'disappointed' by Griezmann decision

Image
Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo said he was "disappointed" by Antoine Griezmann's decision to leave the LaLiga club. Griezmann announced this season would be his last for Atletico, the club he joined from Real Sociedad in 2014. The France international has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona despite signing a contract extension with Atletico until 2023 just last year. A surprised Cerezo said he was saddened by Griezmann's decision to depart the Wanda Metropolitano. "More than annoyed, I am disappointed. I thought that Antoine had a great future at Atletico, with big titles and big league wins," he told Fox Sports on Wednesday. "The problem is that everyone thinks in their own way. We respect his decision, I and Atletico fans. We wish him all the luck in the world. One goes and others will come. "I don't know where he will play, ask him. He can play where he likes. "

2019 PGA Championship Predictions: Tiger's Chances and More

Image
Golf's revamped major season began with one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. What will the second major tournament have in store? It's a tough performance to follow, but the PGA Championship annually has the best field in all of golf and 2019 is no different. Despite Justin Thomas' late withdrawl, the field is stacked once again. Tiger Woods is coming off arguably the biggest win of his career, Dustin Johnson is No. 1 in the world again, Rory McIlroy has been red-hot in 2019 and Brooks Koepka is still being slept on (allegedly) despite winning three of the last seven majors. With the 2019 PGA Championship teeing off Thursday at Bethpage Black, SI.com paneled its golf experts and asked them for their predictions. One sleeper to watch? Michael Rosenberg: Brooks Koepka. Nobody pays attention to him! (What? We're tired of that narrative?) How about Cameron Champ? Monster hitter, hasn't made a cut since February ... if he pulls it together this week

Soccer's biggest clubs prepare for expensive summer because change is the new normal

Image
Zinedine Zidane will lead Real Madrid's summer overhaul, and the Spanish giants will not be alone in their makeover. (Associated Press) Success, or a lack thereof, doesn’t really matter. One way or another, there will be transfers this summer. Lots of them. Provided it doesn’t lose its final Bundesliga game of the season on Saturday, at home against a collapsing Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich will win its seventh straight German championship. This summer, however, a major overhaul of its squad awaits with a slew of veterans and underperformers moving on, and even title-winning manager Niko Kovac not entirely sure of his job. FC Barcelona won an eighth La Liga title in 11 years and a fourth in five. A fifth straight Copa del Rey is still in play as well, with Barca favored against Valencia on May 25. But its team will likely get a major makeover during the summer. Its two most expensive signings ever, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, could both be gone before nex

According to him, already, over 1.5 million candidates that sat for the board’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) had accessed their results, using the result checker code, 55019 as at the time of filing this report. He said that the board had commenced posting the results to the portal, adding that they were now also free to go on- line, view and print their results. “Candidates can now check their results on the portal. “They must first log in their profile and then, click on ‘check UTME Examination Results’, ” he told NAN The spokesman dismissed rumours that the result checker code (55019) was not functional. Also, another opposition party, Hope Democratic Party (HDP), has set a motion to seek an order of the presidential election tribunal restraining President Muhammadu Buhari from presenting himself to be sworn-in on

Putin To Restore Ties With US, Others

Image
Russian President Vladimir Putin says he wants to “fully restore” strained ties between Washington and Moscow, during a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “I would very much like your visit to Russia to benefit Russia-U.S. relations and promote their development,” Putin said as he received Pompeo at his residence in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Putin also praised the Mueller report, despite its findings that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. “Despite the exotic nature of Mr. Mueller’s commission, on the whole, he conducted quite an objective investigation and confirmed the absence of any collusion between the U.S. administration and Russia,” he said. Moscow has rejected these claims “from the very beginning as complete nonsense.” A Kremlin aide later said Putin is also open to a new meeting with Trump at the G20 summit in Japan next month if Moscow receives a formal proposal for such an encounter. Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin aide, said P

Expect increase in petrol pump price, Rewane tells Nigerians

Image
Bismarck Rewane, chief executive officer of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, has asked Nigerians to brace up for an increase in the pump price of petrol. In 2016, the Buhari administration increased a litre of petrol from N87 to N145, sparking criticism among citizens. But making a presentation at the Lagos Business School, Rewane said there were indications that the price of fuel would rise because government is working towards reducing subsidy payments. He described subsidies as a huge drain on government’s revenue, adding that the World Bank put Nigeria’s total subsidy bill in 2018 at N731 billion. “A gradual reduction in subsidy payments is anticipated. Only N305bn set aside for under-recovery in 2019 budget; expect an increase in the pump price of fuel,” he said. “Forty per cent shortfall in provision for subsidies (under-recoveries) points to possible price increases.” Rewane added that hike in price of petrol would result in high inflationary pressure. He

President of the Court, Mr. Ademola Odunade, advised people to be wary of their deeds in relationships because their past actions might haunt them. “The union between Taiwo and Omolara has ceased to be in the interest of peaceful living. “The only child produced by the union is already married and so, free to relate with both parents. “Taiwo shall pay N5,000 to Omolara to enable her move her belongings away from the house,” the arbitrator ruled. In his petition to the court, Dosumu, a businessman and resident of Orita-Challenge in Ibadan, stated that his wife was retarding his progress and therefore, could no longer cope with her. “I would have changed my mind if I had known that my union with Omolara exactly 33 years ago will be full of bitterness and anguish. “I was doing pretty well in my business, hustling for life and t

Abacha Loot: CSOs ask Buhari to fire Malami over $15m ‘dubious’ lawyers fee

Image
Some civil society organisations have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to find a replacement for Abubakar Malami, the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), over the payment of $15 million to lawyers he engaged for the repatriation of $321 million Abacha Loot. Enrich Monfrini, a Swiss lawyer hired by the federal government since 1999 for the recovery of the loot, had already completed the job, and been paid his fee. In a series of interviews with TheCable, Monfrini insisted that there was no need for the AGF to engage new lawyers. Rather than write directly to the Swiss authorities to seek the transfer of the funds to Nigeria, Malami, however, engaged Oladipo Okpeseyi and Tope Adebayo for the purpose, and despite the outcry, the lawyers were eventually paid secretly. At a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the coalition said the president who promised to fight corruption is losing the momentum. “We recall the shady deal involving the minister which led to the ap

Marchisio wants Klopp at Juventus if Allegri departs

Image
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp Former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio wants Jurgen Klopp to take over at the club if Massimiliano Allegri leaves, although he accepts such a move is unlikely. Allegri's future has been in doubt ever since Juventus were knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Ajax. Juve had been considered among the favourites for the competition following the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo at the start of the season, with many suggesting he was the missing piece of the puzzle after the Serie A champions reached the final in 2017 and were narrowly knocked out by eventual winners Real Madrid last term. Allegri is reportedly due to hold talks with club president Andrea Agnelli on Wednesday, with the meeting likely to determine whether or not the coach leaves a year before his contract expires. If the two parties do opt to sever ties, Marchisio – who left for Zenit last year after spending 13 years a Juve player – is dreaming of seeing Live

15 States Where Cops Kill the Most People in America

Image
Being a police officer can be dangerous in America. As we’ve learned from one mass shooting after another, civilians possess weapons that can kill multiple officers before a department even gets a chance to respond. Simply put, the right to own weapons of mass murder has become a guarantee in our country. Another fact of life in America is the right for police to use deadly force, usually without repercussions. In 2015, police killed over 300 unarmed people and over 1,000 civilians in total. According to data from Bowling Green State University, precisely zero of those officers received convictions for murder or manslaughter. If you think 2015 was a bad year, check out 2014. The results were the same: A total of zero cops went to jail for murdering civilians. Meanwhile, the survivors of hundreds of unarmed Americans were left grieving in their wake. Clearly, trigger-happy Americans exist on both sides of the law. As census data collected by the Mapping Police Violence project s

Trump believes China tariffs will help him win reelection

Image
President Trump is telling advisers and close allies that he has no intention of pulling back on his escalating trade war with China, arguing that clashing with Beijing is highly popular with his political base and will help him win reelection in 2020 regardless of any immediate economic pain. Administration officials and outside Trump advisers said Tuesday that they do not expect him to shift his position significantly in coming days, saying he is determined to endure an intensifying showdown with Chinese President Xi Jinping despite turbulence in global markets and frustration within his own party. Trump’s defiance is rooted in decades of viewing the Chinese as economic villains and driven by his desire to fulfill a core promise from his 2016 campaign: that he would dramatically overhaul the U.S.-China relationship. The confrontation is also fueled by Trump’s willingness to flout the norms of presidential behavior, including his suggestion on Tuesday that the Federal Reserve s

The incident was captured on social media and circulated overnight, CBS Houston affiliate KHOU-TV reported. In the video, the woman can be heard shouting "I'm pregnant" multiple times before she is shot. Baytown Police Lt. Steve Dorris on Tuesday afternoon identified the woman as Pamela Turner and said his department has confirmed Turner was not pregnant. He didn't immediately respond to questions from CBS News over whether the determination was made through an autopsy. However, family members told KHOU that Turner was not pregnant. Turner's niece told the station the woman had mental health issues and had had prior run-ins with Baytown police. Dorris earlier said an officer on patrol saw the 45-year-old Turner, whom the officer had encountered before. He knew the woman had

Antic: Where would Griezmann fit at Barcelona?

Image
Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann Former Atletico Madrid head coach Radomir Antic does not see how Antoine Griezmann will fit at LaLiga champions Barcelona. Griezmann is reportedly ready to join Spanish giants Barca after confirming on Tuesday that he will leave Atletico following five years in Madrid. The 28-year-old French World Cup winner spurned a move to Camp Nou 11 months ago but a blockbuster transfer to Ernesto Valverde's side appears back on. However, Antic – who guided Atletico to LaLiga and Copa del Rey success in 1996 – cast doubt over star Griezmann's potential switch. "Given how Barcelona play, I don't see where he would fit," the 70-year-old told reporters. Griezmann – who arrived from Real Sociedad in 2014 – has won the Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and Supercopa de Espana with Atletico. He has scored 15 LaLiga goals for second-placed Atletico and 21 in all competitions this season as the capital club reached the Champions Leag
