How giving mosquitoes diet pills could combat spread of malaria, Zika, dengue

Image
Mosquito *Scientists discover reducing vectors’ appetite stops them sucking blood Although mosquitoes do not need to watch their weight, giving the pests diet pills could combat the spread of malaria, Zika and dengue fever. Researchers found the insects given drugs containing NPY-like receptors were less likely to suck blood when they were presented with a human arm. These receptors regulate appetite in everything from roundworms to humans, and are even used in experimental anti-obesity medication to curb our desire for food.Scientists believe if female mosquitoes could be coaxed into receiving these drugs, it may help control deadly diseases with limited treatment options. The research was carried out by The Rockefeller University in New York and led by Professor Leslie Vosshall, from the laboratory of neurogenetics and behavior. Female mosquitoes suck human blood to help their eggs mature, with each insect having several blood-sucking and egg-laying cycles in her life. T

Like Obama, U.S. envoy Symington cautions Nigerians against infantile political behaviour

Image
U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington Once again, it is the season of messages to Nigerians and its leadership on the need for civilized electoral behaviour. And since those who run the affairs of Nigeria have failed to grow the country to maturity and adulthood, a community of nations (not unlike a village collectively raising a child in typical African fashion) will continue to act as its guardian and join hands in raising her up, otherwise she continues to remain an infant needing to be repeatedly given knocks on its head to behave properly. Former American president, Barrack Obama, was one such village elder, who berated Nigeria in a message he delivered specifically to Nigerians shortly before the 2015 general elections when former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan contested against incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari. That message is believed to have changed the fortunes of that electoral outcome. Jonathan has since alleged in his book My Transition Hour that O

Nigeria wastes 42,160MW as transmission, distribution challenges linger

Image
Challenges facing the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), have led to the wastage of about 42,160.87 mega watts (MW) of electricity out of the 88,566.43MW generated by power generation companies (GenCOs) last year.  Although the current administration had vowed to address the barriers limiting power supply to consumers, statistics made available to The Guardian yesterday, in Abuja by the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) revealed that almost half of Nigeria’s generated power was stranded. Indeed, only about 46,405.56MW was used across the country due to weak distribution capacity and transmission infrastructure, including the national grid.     The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), had said the country’s national grid never transmitted power above 5,375MW, while the average power generated, transmitted and distributed by the grid, which collapses habitually stands at about 3,700MW.Executive Secretary of APGC, Dr. Joy Ogaji, said the prevailing situati

Uncertainty slows traffic, travels ahead of election day

Image
Streets will be deserted on election days Election days in Nigeria come with restrictions of movement. But a few days to the 2019 general elections, motorists, operators and other stakeholders are already feeling the pinch. WOLE OYEBADE and SULAIMON SALAU write. The dark-blue Toyota Camry cab edged slightly in the long line of cars just like it. “Airport, air-port, a-i-r-p-o-r-t”, the driver called-out for the umpteenth time. Except for the sun that shone brighter at the NAHCO garage, a stone throw from the Lagos International Airport, Ikeja; it was an unusual afternoon for the cab operators. The driver, in his 60s, dabbed his forehead as sweat of frustration broke. An hour had rolled by since he joined the queue. He would have made two trips on normal days. Not today. He leaned on the half-opened door, with an arm on the roof top, not minding the settled brown and white dust stains. “Airport. Airport. International Air… Biko, what is happening?” he inquired of another driver.

Who needs an Igbo president in Nigeria?

Image
Nigerians are surely such very well gifted, intelligent and most talented people! Everywhere that Nigerians are found around the world, AT LEAST FOR THOSE WHO HAD LEFT THE COUNTRY NORMALLY, they perform very excellently! However, as soon as they set their feet in this country, their story changes quite entirely! They begin to say such unintelligent things and behave so stupidly – socially, politically, morally and spiritually – that you begin to get properly convinced that there must be evil spirits habiting this country! It must be these evil spirits that enter and possess these people, one after the other, once they set their feet inside this place! What a pity! And nobody has tried to really find out why this is the case! Surely, God permitting us, we will explore that fact in not too long from now! It has even been reported that more wicked evil spirits live in our most dear Aso Rock Villa; no wonder the evils they do there is by far larger and more horrible than can be done els

For love of country or army?

Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai “Do not let us speak of darker days; let us speak rather of sterner days. These are not dark days: these are great days – the greatest days our country has ever lived.” Winston Churchill.WITH these quote from Churchill, different thoughts flashed through my subconscious regarding the essence of our trip to the crude oil rich city of Port-Harcourt when I followed a three-member delegation to the Garden City precisely for a capacity building workshop. The workshop, which was scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on building a seamless synergy between media; civil society practitioners and the military on evolving responsible security reporting. As soon as we settled down in the flight that was unusually boarded as and when due, one of the team members kick started a conversation around the issue of the best global practices in reporting security issues particularly as much of the North East of Nigeria are engulfed i
