‘Total Internet Shutdown’ In Zimbabwe Zimbabwe imposed a “total shutdown” of the internet on Friday, a major provider told customers, after protests early this week triggered a ruthless security crackdown. The internet had been partially restored after a first shutdown started on Tuesday. “We were served with another directive for total shutdown of the internet until further notice,” Econet, the country’s biggest provider, said in a text message on Friday. “Our lawyers advised we are required to comply with the directive pending the court decision on its legality. The earlier directive(s) are already the subject of pending high court application. “We sincerely apologise for all inconveniences caused by the acts of government.” The EU on Thursday joined the US and Britain in criticising the authorities’ response to the protests. “The escalation of violence in Zimbabwe over recent days has been aggravated by the disproportionate use of force by security personnel,”

Solskjaer Warns United Players Over Complacency Manchester United’s Norwegian caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Adrian DENNIS / AFP Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned Manchester United of the dangers of complacency as they prepare to face Brighton after beating Tottenham to extend their perfect record under the interim boss. Solskjaer has won all six of his matches in charge since taking over from Jose Mourinho on December 19 and will look to keep that sequence going at Old Trafford on Saturday. Arguably the most impressive victory in the sequence came last Sunday when Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at Wembley thanks to a Marcus Rashford goal and an eye-catching goalkeeping display from David de Gea. “As I’ve said before, you go into every single game as a Manchester United coach, as a player or manager, thinking you’ll win the next one, that’s just the nature of this club,” said Solskjaer. “We’ve had six good games but the next one is the most important one. Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold joined a growing injury list with a knee problem picked up in the warm-up ahead of last weekend’s 1-0 win at Brighton that could keep the English international out for up to a month. Centre-backs Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip are still working their way back to fitness, while the decision to let Nathaniel Clyne leave on loan to Bournemouth earlier this month has been questioned. LTD / AFP A Thai-born director who took just weeks to shoot the first film about the dramatic cave rescue of the “Wild Boars” football team says his focus is on authenticity and the mission’s “unsung” heroes, with book publishers and Hollywood studios jostling to make their versions of the saga. Tom Waller says “The Cave”, which is aiming for Thai release for the July anniversary of the operation, will be a “genuine” retelling of the gripping mission to extract the 12 boys and their coach from the waterlogged Tham Luang cave. Its cast features more than a dozen of the real-life rescue heroes as well as extras such as the cooks who provided food round-the-clock food as officials and the world’s media massed at the cave entrance. 2019: a big year for Nigerian football, but distractions must be avoided It is clear that 2019 will be a huge year for football, especially in Nigeria. In June, both senior national sides – the men’s and women’s will compete in the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA Women’s World Cup respectively. There will also be continental and possibly global competitions for both the Under-17 and Under-20 teams. This makes it even more troubling that, with all these on the horizon, there appears to be another round of distractions for the top brass of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). This time, it revolves around alleged financial impropriety over the course of Amaju Pinnick’s tenure at the helm of the nation’s football. This has precipitated a back and forth in the public space as to whether or not the Presidency, via the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is seeking to indict him. The man in question has, naturally, sought to show that his movements remain unchecked a

Credit: Ian KINGTON / AFP West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini says the club are open to selling star forward Marko Arnautovic this month, but only if the price is right. Arnautovic was the subject of a reported £35 million ($45 million) bid from an unnamed Chinese Super League club last week, an offer his brother and agent Danijel Arnautovic pleaded with West Ham to accept. Shanghai SIPG are the side said to be interested and have reportedly offered Arnautovic a wage packet of £200,000 per week for a four-year deal. West Ham have so far refused to accept any bids and urged Arnautovic to honour the contract he signed when joining the club from Stoke in 2017. However, Pellegrini admitted that stance could change with an increased offer that would benefit both the club and the player, 29. “They are not forcing me to sell Marko Arnautovic but I think as a manager th

Falz: Receive Your Immoral Instructions I was in that room when Falz made the statement, “I detest transactional sex.” I was the person who recorded that video and released it on the internet. Was Falz wrong to state a personal opinion? Did he misfire with his candid truth about his preferences? Did he make a mistake? Falz I love Falz. I love his art. I love his brand. He makes music that has always been multi-layered. His raps, his endless forays into the grey areas of storytelling, and the courage to carry through with music that provides more than just a good feeling is a dying art. From his debut album, ‘Wazup Guy’ through ‘Stories That Touch’ and ‘27’, listeners have had a sense that this is a journey that we are all on, with the man. Two songs off of his ‘27’ album – ‘Child of the world’ and ‘Confirm’ carried a lot of weight because they touched on the perils of transactional sex and internet fraud (Yahoo Yahoo). The former struck deep because he made it a single
