Minimum Wage: Presidency Moves To Appease Labour File Photo Following Nigerian Labour Congress’ (NLC) threat to call out workers on indefinite strike on Tuesday to protest non-implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage recommended by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage, the presidency has moved to pacify the workers, appealing to them to tarry a while on their planned action. The NLC had asked President Muhammadu Buhari to submit the N30,000 minimum wage implementation bill to the National Assembly for passage by December 31 last year or face a nationwide strike action. With the deadline unmet, the NLC President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, had said the Tuesday strike had become imminent despite a federal government offer for a resolution meeting schedule for January 8. Authoritative presidency sources, however, told THISDAY Wednesday that the president is making efforts to resolve the wage dispute, which threatens to further obstruct the nation’s fragile econom...
How Atiku Can Win 2019 Presidential Election — Witches P/Harcourt – The Association of White Witches in Nigeria (AWWN) has warned the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 16 election, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, not to repeat the mistake of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, if he wants to win the election. Jonathan, the witches said, refused to listen to “wise” counsel which eventually led to his losing the presidential election of that year to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The group cautioned Atiku to hearken to instructions given to him if he actually wanted to win the election and redeem Nigerians from hunger and poverty orchestrated by the bad economic policies of the present administration. Speakin...

2019 elections: How APC will win in Saraki’s senatorial district – Lai Mohammed The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has stated that Kwara Central Senatorial District, represented by Senate President Bukola Saraki, will be the easiest to be delivered to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in this year’s general elections. The minister said this on Thursday in Ilorin while inspecting the Campaign Office and Situation Room of the Buhari \Osinbajo Project (BOP) 2019, a political group druming support and votes for the APC in Kwara. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister inspected the office ahead of Friday’s inauguration of the 18,000 grassroot votes canvassers across all polling units in Kwara. Lai Mohammed, while reacting to prediction in certain quarters that Saraki would be returned to the Senate even if APC wins other elections in the state, said the revolution in Kwara was total. “The easiest nut to crack wi...

Outrage as Buhari’s niece heads INEC's collation centre [FILES] President Buhari The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come under criticism over its appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari as head of the agency’s collation centre committee for the 2019 presidential election. Zakari is widely believed to be President Muhammadu Buhari’s niece. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday rejected the appointment of Zakari who had been INEC’s national commissioner in charge of welfare and health. Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the party said the appointment would compromise the presidential election, particularly on account of “her blood relationship” with Buhari who is a candidate in the poll. PDP’s national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, described the appointment as a step towards destroying the future of democracy in Nigeria. INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had earlier, yesterday, announced that Zakari would chair the com...

How 5,113 Nigerians were killed in 11 months  Vanguard By Clifford Ndujihe LAGOS — THE year 2018 was one that many Nigerian families would want to forget in a hurry but alas they cannot. Reason: Many families across all states of the country lost members to the flickering flames of insecurity, which according to Vanguard’s tally claimed no fewer than 5,113 persons as of November 2018. The death figure is conservative because it is based on reported incidents. Many killings were not reported and some casualty figures were not disclosed. Specifically, deaths taken into account are those arising from sectarian violence, herdsmen and farmers’ clashes, Boko Haram insurgency, cult clashes, and armed robbery. If those who died in the custody of kidnappers were added the tally would be much higher. The deaths recorded since the beginning of 2018 exclude those who died from illness, accidents, flooding, childbirth, and Lassa fever among others. Accord...

Of figures and their application By Jude Atupulazi MAKE no mistake about this: the greatest challenge facing the Nigerian nation today is economic. With little else to rely on for foreign exchange, save her oil, which in itself is no longer the life saver it used to be, the country is teetering on the precipice of economic collapse amid high inflation rate, high unemployment rate and high cost of living. As the country inches closer and closer to the 2019 general elections, therefore, it has become imperative that only the right choice of leaders by the electorate can halt the nation’s ominous slide to an ineluctable disaster. Thankfully though, all hope is not lost for the nation as a light appears to shine at the end of her tunnel. In Atiku and Obi, Nigeria will have two people who are deeply involved in the business of managing finances and who have succeeded in doing so. In Peter Obi, the running mate of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Dem...

Oshiomhole: Angry governors and weaponisation of dissent [FILE PHOTO] Adams Oshiomhole, APC leader Except in utopia, the chairmanship of a national party in any democracy on earth, let alone that of a governing party, is certainly not a picnic. The unfolding scenario in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) sharply dramatises this as losers in her recent primary elections appear to be shifting into overdrive to diminish the party’s superiority over an out-gunned opposition that is carefully watching from the wings. Some angry governors who have lost out in the battle to impose their anointed successors as governorship candidates on the party have thrown caution to the winds, engaging in a macabre dance in direct affront to the leadership of the party, which approximates presidential authority. This is because essential validation continues to flow from President Muhammadu Buhari, the leader of the APC, in tacit approbation of the party’s handling of t...

Addressing journalists at the Presidential Campaign headquarters Thursday, Director, Media and Publicity of the PDP Presidential Council, PPCO, Kola Ologbondiyan said the party would not accept the choice of Mrs. Zakari for reasons it had enumerated in the past. “Today (Thursday), we have been informed that the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, apparently in furtherance of the plots to rig the Presidential election, has appointed Mrs. Amina Zakari, a blood relation (niece) of the APC candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, as the Chairperson of INEC Advisory Committee and Presidential election Collation Center Committee. “The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization, PPCO, outrightly, vehemently and unequivocally rejects, in its entirety, the appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari, President Buhari’s blood re...
