How I was deceived to run for president under ACPN – Oby Ezekwesili

Image
By Luminous Jannamike Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has blamed her decision to run for presidency on the platform of her now estranged party, the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, on an error of judgement on her part. Dr Oby Ezekwesili Ezekwesili, who announced her withdrawal from the presidential race, last week, stated this on Monday at a world press conference in Abuja. According to her, she fell for the ‘tricks’ of the ACPN leadership when they approached her to run for presidency on their platform because they created an impression that the party believed in her disapproval of the transactional money-grabbing politics of the PDP and APC which has held the country back since independence. She said: “When the ACPN leadership approached me in a series of visits to appeal that I run for office on their platform, the party appeared to be a good fit. It was founded by some disgruntled PDP members some years ago, but when its prime founder decid

Court Stays Execution On Judgement Excluding Rivers APC From General Elections

Image
update by Channels TV The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday granted a stay of execution of the Federal High Court judgement nullifying all primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State. Apart from nullifying the primaries, Justice Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court had also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from fielding the party’s candidates in the forthcoming general elections in the state. But Justice Ali Gumel, who presided on an appeal filed by a faction of the APC in Rivers, granted a stay of execution on the judgement delivered by Justice Omotosho on January 7. However, the counsels to the Magnus Abe-led faction of the APC argued that a stay of execution cannot be granted on a matter that was already done. They added that no order was granted by the court to the electoral umpire. Justice Gumel granted the stay of execution four days after the appeal court reserved its ruling on the matter

Stock market investors lose over N3tr to political intrigues

Image
[FILES] Nigerian Stock Exchange Alleged political intrigues ahead of the 2019 elections have taken a severe toll on the nation’s stock market, causing investors to lose over N3.43 trillion in nine months of persistent decline. Many blue-chip companies quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) have also experienced unprecedented losses, contrary to the general expectations of positive earnings in 2018. The losses were calculated as at close of trading in May 10, 2018, when the announcement of the ward congresses was made, to the last trading day in January 2019. Analysts, operators and investors, at the weekend, blamed the persistent lull on perceived risk associated with the coming 2019 general elections, making mostly foreign investors to embark on a massive selloff and consequently exit the market. According to the stakeholders, since the last eight months when the political activities have been on the upswing, the market has been on the downward trend with a frequent

“Pogba Finally Now Playing With His Brain” – Scholes

Image
Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, has said that Paul Pogba is finally using his brain to play the game under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Pogba was underwhelming in the first half of the season while playing under Jose Mourinho. The two had a rather nasty falling out which saw Pogba in and out of the team, until the results got too bad for Mourinho to keep his job and he was fired. Since the departure of the Portuguese, Pogba has been like a man reborn, scoring 4 goals in as many games. Scholes speaking to Radio 5 expressed joy at the fact that the Frenchman has found his mojo again and he credited Solskjaer as being the man to make that happen. “It’s difficult. Obviously that’s what Ole has done. “I’m not sure that [Massimiliano] Allegri at Juventus would have had that kind of attitude with him. “I think it’s just down to the player. I’ve been one of his biggest critics and I hated doing it, but the reason I was doing it is because I’ve played alongside the lad. “I’ve

‘Out of 35m Nigerians with BVN, 25m are underserved’

Image
A financial expert and former Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Coronation Trustees Limited, Mrs. Oghogho Osula, has stated that out of 35 million with Bank Verification Number (BVM), 25 million are generally considered to be financially underserved. Osula , who stated this while addressing capital market participants at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in Lagos, at the weekend, regretted that only 10 million of the number are adjudged to be financially included and served. “An estimated seven million financially underserved individuals do not own bank accounts, but enjoy limited financial services through informal arrangements such as cooperatives, esusu, among others. It follows therefore, that only about 42 million (42 per cent) of the estimated 100 million adult Nigerians enjoy some form of financial inclusion. “Nigeria has a large mobile market, with about 133 million subscribers and a market penetration of around 75 per cent in 2014, according to the Nigerian

(Photo by Paul ELLIS / AFP) Manchester City reduced the gap at the top of the Premier League to two points for 24 hours at least as Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick helped them to a 3-1 win over Arsenal. The reigning champions took the lead after 48 seconds through Aguero’s header as Arsenal nearly crumbled early on, but they were soon level as Laurent Koscielny scored a header of his own from a corner on the 11th minute. But City went in ahead at half-time as Aguero simply finished off from Raheem Sterling’s fine assist on the 44th minute, and the Argentine completed his hat-trick with a fortuitous close-range touch off the side of his body in the 61st minute, though there was a suspicion of handball.
