Khashoggi murder: Family denies considering settlement

The children of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, on Wednesday denied discussing any sort of settlement over his killing by Saudi agents. This followed a report that the family was considering accepting financial and material compensation for his death. “Currently the trial is taking place and no settlement has been discussed or is being discussed,” said the statement, published on Twitter by Khashoggi’s eldest son, Salah. The Washington Post, where Khashoggi was a columnist, reported last week that the children were given million-dollar houses and monthly five-figure payments as compensation. But it added however, that it was a separate deal from any potential “blood money” payment that could be negotiated after the murder trial under the Saudi justice system. Security operatives have finally caught two kidnappers who abducted Fire Service boss in Lagos. The suspects Two members of the gang that kidnapped Lagos State Fire Service boss, Rasaki Musibau and six others have been arrested. They were arrested in an operation led by the Command’s tactical teams led by the Officer –in- Charge of anti- kidnapping unit, SP Bulus R Musa, according to a statement by Lagos State Police spokesman, Bala Elkana. 60-year-old widow remanded over alleged lover’s death

A chief Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has ordered the remand in prison custody of a 60-year-old widow, Priscilla Ikenga over the death of her alleged lover. Ikenga allegedly pushed the victim, Eziwhuo Ejuh an alleged drunk,  during an altercation and he fail to the ground on his forehead and died. A police document obtained from the court alleged that the deceased visited the suspect while drunk on February 23, 2019 and in the bid to resist him from gaining access into her house mistakenly pushed him. The incident the Police said happened in one of the communities in Emohua Local Government Area of the state. The two-count charge of murder preferred against him was not read to her; hence she did not take any plea. She had no legal representation in the sitting. Dispatch rider, one other killed as hoodlums clash in Fadeyi

Two persons were confirmed dead on Wednesday when a fight broke out at Fadeyi, Ikorodu road area of Lagos State among hoodlums popularly called ‘area boys’. The Nation gathered the two persons were a dispatch rider killed by a stray bullet when he rammed into the scene and an unidentified man from the hoodlums. 48 houses destroyed, 285 persons homeless in Plateau rainstorms

No fewer than 285 persons have been rendered homeless by rainstorm that destroyed at least 48 houses in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, has become a source of concern to both the State and Local Governments. The residents of Toghomwol-Bungha community in Mangu were most hit. Most of the houses affected were either totally destroyed to the foundation level or had their roofs completely blown off, leaving no chance for the victims. “I have six children and our house has completely been destroyed by the rainstorm. I don’t have a place to stay now,” lamented one Mr Dabit, a victim of the storm. He said that he had no option but to look for a relationship to keep his family. Nigerian High Commission London changes staff status to ‘self-employed’

Locally recruited staffers of the Nigerian High Commission London would from April 20th have their employment status changed from “employee” to “self-employed “ the News Agency of Nigeria( NAN) reports on Wednesday. A Bill seeking to curtail burial and funeral expenses in Anambra State has been passed by the state House of Assembly. The Bill which was sponsored by the member representing Anaocha 11 constituency,Hon Charles Ezeani, was passed after due consideration by the House during Wednesday’s plenary. The burial and funeral expenses had been on the rise in the state, which forced the Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor to raise the alarm a few years ago. The Supreme Court has struck out an appeal by members of the sacked executive of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, led by Ishola Balogun Fulani. A five-man panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vivour, held in a unanimous ruling on Wednesday, that the appeal was without merit. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, in the lead ruling, noted that the appeal, being on an interlocutory decision of a High Court in Ilorin, the record ought to be complied and transmitted within 14 days, as required under Order 7 of the Supreme Court’s Rules. Court orders Nigeria Immigration Service to pay ex-staff N9.7M in 60 days

The National Industrial Court, Abuja, on Wednesday ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service, to pay an ex-staff, Oguntoyinbo Made N9.7 million in salary arrears within 30 days. The salary as ordered by the court, was for July 1, 1999 to Aug.31,2014. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Made was employed by the Service, on Nov. 1, 1993 as an Inspector of Immigration on Conpass 07. Made had approached the court to seek redress after he was removed from the service as a result of a retrenchment exercise in April, 1999. Although he was reabsorbed back into the service in 2003, he was not part of the day to day activities and promotion exercises of the service. However, by the judgment of the same court in June, 2014, the defendant was ordered to recognise the claimant as its staff. Following the directive of the court, the claimant was again reabsorbed, but the never paid the claimant’s salary arrears from July, 1999 to Aug.31,2014, as recommended by its legal depart

An Upper Area Court III, sitting in Kasuwan Nama in Jos, on Wednesday, sentenced a 21-year-old mechanic , Abdulrahim Mustapha to 21 years in prison for raping a 9-year-old girl. File: Rape The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, who sentenced Mustapha without an option to pay fine, said it would serve as a deterrent to others who would want to indulge in such crime. Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on April 5, at the Laranto Police Station by one Yusuf Dada of Rikkos village Jos, who is the complainant. Gokwat said that Mustapha tricked the 9-year-old girl into buying him pure water  for him and dragged her into an uncompleted building and raped her. ‘’ This same accused raped a 13-year-old girl a day earlier while she was sleeping in her room, ‘’ said Gokwat. The Auburn University senior attempted a handspring double front flip with a blind landing before falling awkwardly on the mat and suffering the gruesome injury. The aerospace engineering student was attempting her first pass at the Baton Rouge Regional before her floor routine ended in horror. While performing the handspring double she fell on the blind landing, dislocating both her legs and then grabbed her knees in agony, leaving the stunned crowd in silence. This is an average of more than ten buildings collapsing every year, which is by whatever standard, unnervingly excessive. And every building collapse leaves a trail of woes: deaths, pains and sorrows, and emotional and psychological wounds that may take a long time to heal, if ever. Recently, a three-storey building, still occupied by businesses, residents and a primary school, collapsed in Ita Faji area of Lagos, killing 20 persons, many of them primary school pupils. IMF reviews Nigeria’s growth upwards to 2.1%

Earlier in January it had reviewed the statistics downwards to 2.0 percent from initial figure of 2.3 percent referencing challenges in the international oil prices. But oil prices have been stabilizing since February this year. The Lagos Police Command said they were released unhurt by their abductors in a statement by its spokesperson, DSP Bala Elkana. They regained their freedom on Wednesday at about 11:45pm.
