Buhari speaks on election of Lawan, Gbajabiamila as senate president, speaker

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday night said the election of Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as the Senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives marked a departure from the “duplicity and perfidy of the immediate past”. Both Lawan and Gbajabiamila were supported by the presidency and the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress. In spite of that, Buhari, according to a statement by his media adviser Femi Adesina, does not want a legislature that will act as a mere appendage of the presidency. “The Executive does not desire a rubber stamp Legislature,” Buhari said. “While separation of powers is essential, collaboration among all Arms of Government should be the name of the game.” Buhari also saluted all the national legislators and their political parties for their display of patriotism and non-partisanship before and during the election. JAMB, institutions approve 160 as cut-off mark for 2019 admission

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Tuesday approved 160 and above as this year’s national minimum cut-off mark for admission into public universities. The decision was reached at the 19th Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which held at the Bola Babalakin Auditorium, Gbongan, Osun State According to the Nation, the board also approved 140 as minimum UTME score for admission into private universities and 110 for admission into private polytechnics.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday prayed the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to dismiss petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar against his Feb. 23 re-election. Buhari made the prayer through his Counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, in a motion adopted and argued on Tuesday before Justice Mohammed Garba-led five-man panel in Abuja. Olanipekun submitted that the petition was fundamentally defective, adding that his client won the presidential “square and clear’’. He explained that the allegations advanced by the petitioners were mere theoretical assumptions that could not stand the test of critical legal debate. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tribunal also entertained the president’s motion that sought to effect amendment on the identities and addresses of counsel representing him. Omo Agege Emerges Deputy Senate Presdient

Ovie Omo Agege Senators-elect Ovie Omo-Agege (APC-Delta) has been elected the deputy senate president of the 9th Senate. He defeated Senator Ike Ekeweremadu. The election followed the announcement of the position by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Mohammed Sani-Omolori at the Tuesday’s inauguration ceremony in Abuja. While Omo-Agege, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, was nominated by senator-elect Baba Kaita (APC-Katsina), Ekweremadu, representing Enugu West, was nominated by senator-elect Chukwuka Utazi (PDP-Enugu). The nomination of Omo-Agege was seconded by senator-elect Abdullahi Sabi (APC-Niger) while that of Ekweremadu was seconded by senator-elect Rose Oko (PDP-Cross River).

June 12: FG Declares Wednesday As Public Holiday

In line with the new bill signed into law for June 12 to be annually celebrated as Democracy Day in Nigeria, the Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 12, 2019, as Public Holiday. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Barr. Georgina Ekeoma Ehuriah made the declaration and congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad for the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country. A statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the Ministry of Interior, Mohammed Manga said that the Permanent Secretary “called on Nigerians to continue to cherish the sacrifice made by heroes of democracy, particularly those who lost their lives in the struggle for the actualization of Democratic Governance in Nigeria in order to make the country a better place for all.” The permanent secretary further called for the “collaboration and cooperation of all Nigerians with the Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari towards achieving our collective aspiration

BREAKING: Lawan elected senate president

Ahmad Lawan, lawmaker representing Yobe north senatorial district, has been elected president of the senate. Lawan secured 79 votes to defeat Ali Ndume from Borno south who polled 28 votes. Although the two contestants are of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the leadership of the ruling party had endorsed the new senate president. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had teamed up with Ndume but unlike in 2015 when Bukola Saraki, then of the APC, rode to power with the support of the PDP, the ruling party perfected its plot to ensure Lawan’s victory. Lawan was the choice of the leadership of the APC in 2015. Earlier, Yayaha Abdullahi from Kebbi had nominated Lawan for the position while Solomon Olamilekan from Lagos seconded the nomination.

I joined cultism because of love for my boyfriend – 14-year-old girl

A 14-year-old girl has told the police in Lagos that she joined cultism out of love for her boyfriend. The girl (names withheld) said that her boyfriend belonged to Eiye confraternity. When she became a member, she was made a spy for the group. Speaking when she was paraded yesterday in Lagos alongside other suspected cultists, the teenager said: “When we started dating, I didn’t know he was into cultism. It was after a while that I discovered. And because of the love I have for him, I joined cultism. “Since I joined, I have not gone home. I stay with my boyfriend in his parents’ house. “After the group had studied me for long, I was converted to be spying for them. My work is to lookout for policemen and other security agents. I also cook for them.” Also arrested is a 41-year-old man, Omidele Yusuf, who introduced himself as ‘Elder in Council for Eiye Cultists.’ The suspect said that he renounced his membership of Eiye confraternity after he was released from prison in 2014
