In a unanimous ruling by a five-man panel of justices, led by Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, the Apex Court says the application is incompetent and lacks merit. The panel added that the application should not have been brought before it in the first place. The lead counsel to the appellant Robert Clarke is, however, insisting that the decision of the court was based on technicalities adding the merits of his application were not looked into. He says he will tighten the loose ends that the judgment has pointed out and he will submit his application again. Lead counsel to the appellant had earlier approached the Supreme Court to review its earlier judgment on the Zamfara Governorship elections, which held in part that the APC never conducted its primaries, a judgment that made all the candidates who took pa...

CBN Dismisses Speculations of Ban on Banks Investing in Treasury Bills

Image
Central bank still in tightening mood as MPC meets LCCI backs new lending policy The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday dismissed reports that it had barred commercial banks from investing in treasury bills. It dismissed a report in the media that it had stopped commercial banks from buying treasury bills so they could be more liquid to give out loans. A top official of the CBN told THISDAY that while the central bank would be glad to see less participation by commercial banks in the primary market treasury bills auction, it makes a policy pronouncement to that effect, banks are still free to buy treasury bills. The central bank had in the past few days taken measures to encourage commercial banks to lend more to operators of micro, small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs), as it seeks to support the federal government’s economic diversification agenda. Owing to this, the source, who did not want his name in print because he was not authorised to speak on the matter,...

Image
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addresses clerics in Tehran (AFP file) Iran has captured 17 spies working for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and some have been sentenced to death, Iranian media reported on Monday. COMMENT State television quoted the Intelligence Ministry as saying it had broken up a CIA spying ring and captured 17 suspects. A ministry official said some of those arrested had been sentenced to death, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. There were no concrete details on the alleged spying ring but it comes at a time of heightened tensions between the US and Iran. In recent months, the US has blamed Iran for several attacks on oil tankers in the Arabian Gulf and Revolutionary Guards also shot down an American drone. Although there was no confirmation that it is the same group accused of being a CIA ring, last month, Iran sai...

Liverpool 's latest friendly in United States ended in controversy and acrimony

Image
Larouci, an Algerian who has caught the eye recently, left the pitch on a stretcher after tackle Sevilla are not a team for whom Liverpool have great affection. They lost to the Spaniards in the 2016 Europa League final, while two meetings in the Champions League in 2017 saw Liverpool held to draws, home and away, after collapsing defensively. Safe to say this latest meeting did nothing to restore relations. The behaviour of some Sevilla players was disgraceful and it was a surprise that they only had one man sent-off. Joris Gnagnon, the French defender, received a red card for kicking 18-year-old full back Yasser Larouci off his feet. Larouci, an Algerian who has caught the eye these past few weeks, left the pitch on a stretcher. It stemmed from Sevilla being unhappy that Liverpool had not put the ball out when one of their own players was on the floor 'Harry got a knock on his cheekbone and his eye so not too cool. He should be ok as well. That is the situation. I wo...

Israel demolishes buildings in Jerusalem, 800,000 to lose homes

Image
Israeli forces began demolishing buildings near a military barrier on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Monday, in the face of Palestinian protests and international criticism. Bulldozers accompanied by hundreds of Israeli soldiers and police moved in to Sur Baher, a Palestinian village on the edge of East Jerusalem in an area that Israel captured and occupied in the 1967 Middle East War. Palestinians fear that the razing of homes and buildings near the fence will set a precedent for other towns along the route of the barrier, which runs for hundreds of kilometers around and through the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The demolition is the latest round of protracted wrangling over the future of Jerusalem, home to more than 500,000 Israelis and 300,000 Palestinians, and sites sacred to Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Israeli forces cut through a wire section of the barrier in Sur Baher under cover of darkness early on Monday, and began clearing residents from the area. Floodlights...
