Theresa May Faces Defeat In Parliament Over Brexit Plan File Photo of Theresa May Prime Minister Theresa May faced the prospect of a historic defeat in a vote on her Brexit deal in parliament on Tuesday potentially leaving Britain in limbo about the biggest political and economic change for the country in decades. Barely two-and-a-half months before Britain is due to leave the EU, May’s expected defeat leaves open a range of outcomes, from resurrecting her deal, leaving the EU with no deal at all or holding another referendum that could halt Brexit altogether. The prime minister’s hopes of keeping her widely unpopular plan alive will hinge on the scale of her expected loss. A comparatively narrow defeat could allow her to try again, but a loss by 100 votes or more would most likely be seen as dooming the plan for good. As Britain’s deepest political crisis for at least half a century built to a head, a spokesman for May said she would respond quickly to the result o

Appreciating The Nigerian Military At its height, the Boko Haram insurgency not only threatens to decimate Nigeria as we know it; it also sought to bring large swathes of land under the absolute control of a bloodthirsty sect. Photo:Afolabi Sotunde / Reuters Boko Haram declared a caliphate that spanned 11 local councils in states such as Borno, Yobe and Adamawa and reigned with absolute impunity over about 1.7 million people in those councils, according to the 2006 population figures. Insecurity was profound in the Northeast, infrastructure destroyed, farmlands were deserted, markets became desolated, schools were constantly violated and large-scale humanitarian crisis that still bites very hard today planted itself in the region. But that despicable part of the Nigerian history is fading away, giving room to a rising hope. And the country has its military—often maligned, yet celebrated—to thank for that. Brutal attacks on soft and military targets are

Policy Imperatives for Diversity Management: Nigeria in Comparative Perspective By Ladipo Aadamolekun Diversity Management in Nigeria since 1954 – An Overview Nigeria was established as a federation in 1954 to accommodate the country’s ethno-linguistic differences: a central government sharing political power and national resources with three regional governments where each of the country’s three major ethno-linguistic groups (Hausa-Fulani, Igbo and Yoruba) was dominant. The federal system adopted (explicated in the country’s 1954 Constitution) was close to K. C. Wheare’s classical definition of the federal principle:  “the method of dividing powers so that the general [central] and regional governments are each within a sphere co-ordinate and independent”. This system was maintained with only minor modifications when a fourth region was created in 1963. Prof. Adamolekun In 1957, Prime Minister Balewa championed the adoption of a coalition government (al

DDB Lagos’s historic feat as it emerges Nigeria’s most creative agency The mood was pensive, but festive at the same time, when advertising bigwigs gathered for the 13th edition of Lagos Advertising and Ideas Festival (LAIF) 2018, which recognises creative excellence in all areas of advertising and marketing communications. As the evening wore on, it was not clear which agency would take the day as quite a couple of industry top dogs such as Insight and SO&U were making a good showing along with the usual suspects, X3M Ideas and Noah’s Ark. The strong showing made by younger agencies such as Culture, Etuodi, BBDO and UpIntheSky also heightened the intense competition. However, if there was one agency that clearly demonstrated superior creative breadth and depth in diverse award-winning works, it was DDB Lagos. By the evening ended, DDB had yet again topped the overall list of creative agencies in Nigeria by winning the Grand Prix award for the acclaimed ‘Man in the Box

Osinbajo and failed relocation orders to oil majors, Apapa trucks ‘NNPC must move to Niger Delta to encourage IOCs’ Tracking electoral promises by Nigerian politicians for their implementation could be a tricky affair. In most cases, those promises are not originally meant to be fulfilled; they are usually made on the spur of the moment to garner support and accolades from the swooning crowd. Once these politicians turn their back they hatch yet other promises to be made to the next crowd of supporters or victims. Whenever such politicians are called out, their handlers begin to spin a lot of tales in the guise of giving nuanced interpretations that contradict what was so obviously said. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has fallen into the same category of politicians. At least two of the promises or orders he made last year are yet to be fulfilled. The first was the order he gave to international oil companies to immediately relocate their headquarters to the Niger Delta. H

Transfer: Ancelotti speaks on Koulibaly joining Man United Napoli manager, Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that his star defender, Kalidou Koulibaly, is not keen on leaving Italy. Reports this week claimed Koulibaly was desperate to leave Serie A after being the victim of racist abuse in Italy. Manchester United are considered to be in the fore of completing the transfer, with Napoli valuing the centre-back at over £90million. But Ancelotti dismissed the latest speculation and denied that Koulibaly was unhappy in Italy. “In England they write that Koulibaly can leave because of the problem of racism, I do not think so,” Metro UK quoted him as saying. “Koulibaly is happy in Naples, he’s upset like others, but it will not be a trigger for a goodbye. “He never showed it, he wants to stay in Naples and in Italy, a country he likes very much.’ United failed in an attempt to lure Koulibaly away from Napoli during the last summer transfer window, as the Italian club cl

Intrigues as new minimum wage faces uncertainty   [FILE] Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige Gloria Ehiaghe writes that the Federal Government’s reluctance to transmit the N30,000 new national minimum wage to the National Assembly, coupled with labour unions threats to shut down the country are among the intrigues plaguing the realisation of enhanced workers’ welfare in Nigeria. The clamour for a new wage, which effectively began in 2017, has dragged up to 2019, at the peak of the general elections, which would undoubtedly shift the attention of Nigerians, who are now eagerly awaiting who emerges president and governors in the 36 states of the federation in the next general elections. As it stands, the implementation of the new wage may not be feasible in the first quarter. The reality is that even when the bill is transmitted to the National Assembly on or before January 23, as claimed by the Federal Government, it will be subjected to public hearing and a
