Taking The Buhari/Jubril Story Seriously By Mod -[ Update ] President Muhammadu Buhari Those who refute the story of the substitution of President Muhammadu Buhari with a certain Jubril of Sudan typically deny the possibility of such and then descend to name-calling the conspiracy theorists spreading the rumour (let’s call them the Jibrilists). This approach seemed to have further strengthened the conviction of the Jibrilists who take the virulent denials as proof they are on to something. Those who have tried to discredit the stories based on objective facts might be missing the point. Not all stories are evaluable based on objective reality alone, and that is why scholars parse even rumours, urban legends, and mythology. Such narrations too are also considered an expression of the truth of a society’s situation. When a story feels true as against whether it is objectively true, it also measures the social impulse. So, why does a story of an impost

In this interview with BODE GBADEBO, he bares his mind on the controversies surrounding the last governorship primaries in the state and the chances of the APC at the 2019 elections. Recently, There has been a reconciliatory move by the national headquarters of the APC on the contentious primaries that took place in Bauchi. We want to know whether these issues have been resolved and if not, what is the government doing to stop possible implosion in the party? First and foremost, I don’t really think there was any contention to the primaries as far as Bauchi state is concerned. Of course, for any election that you need, one person will only be the winner and on such cases, the loser will not agree because everybody wants to be a winner. Macron: Young, charming and cold By Mod - [ Update Vanguard ] By Owei Lakemfa AN uprising against the anti-poor policies of 41-year old French President, Emmanuel Jean-Michel Frederic Macron, had been long expected before it broke out about three weeks ago. What was not clear before then, was what would trigger it after he had assumed victory over pensioners, railway workers and the labour unions. Emmanuel Macron Protest clashes erupt in Paris as anti-Macron rallies return As it turned out, his undoing was the decision to increase fuel prices by way of a new tax regime which would increase fuel by about 30 cents per gallon and will continue to rise over the next few years. In response, on November 17, French drivers donning the yellow vests – the fluorescent, high-visibility vest motorists are obliged to carry in their cars – led an estimated 280,000 demonstrators to the streets to commence the protests. Our country of valueless values By Mod -[ Update ] Nigerians crowd population<br />PHOTO: LUCY LADIDI ELUKPO Living in Nigeria of our contemporary time is like being engaged in a war. Many of our friends, neighbours and colleagues are departing or departed; they are going or gone and those of us who live and survive live and survive in the company of the “dead and the dying as on a battle field.” Whatever our status, position, profession or attitude this is our present reality. At times you even wonder and wander in your mind if ours is not becoming a really morbifically morbid society. What has brought us to this distinctive state of tragic truth is traceable to the working field of our political miners. In their endeavour to fortify their greed and egotism they have systematically turned our moral landscape into scenes of valueless values. Clearly, everywhere about us today we see reports, evidences and scenes of primitive dicing with death which h

Curse of oil: Time to return to agriculture By Mod - [ Update Vanguard ] By Zayyan Gwandu, Taremi Zuokumor & Maryam Zakari THE good old days are certainly gone when groundnut grown in Northern Nigeria was a major contributor to the national economy. The famous groundnut pyramids were the admiration of everyone from far and near; a pride of the nation. Indeed within the West African sub-region, Nigeria dominated in groundnut production, with 41% of the produce coming from the Northern part of the country. As far back as 1880, there were also cocoa farms in Western Nigeria, including Lagos and Otta. By the 1950s to 1970s, Nigeria was the second highest producer of cocoa in the world. In the South Eastern part of the country, oil palm flourished. Apart from groundnut, cocoa and oil palm, there were other agricultural produces like rubber, cotton, tobacco, to name but a few. All these accounted for the economy being stable and Nigeria was the better for i

Report: Nigeria Third Most Terrorised Country Fourth Year Running By Mod- [ Update ] File Photo Nigeria is still the third most terrorised country in the world, according to the 2018 Global Terrorism Index. The report, released on Wednesday, blamed the spate of terrorism in Nigeria and the “increase in violence involving Fulani extremists even as deaths committed by Boko Haram are falling”. Nigeria is ranked only below Iraq and Afghanistan, both in first and second positions respectively. In 2018 alone, hundreds of Nigerians have been killed in attacks by suspected herdsmen as well as clashes between the herders and farmers/communities. States worst hit in the attacks are Plateau, Benue, Zamfara, and Taraba, among others. The report, however, noted that when compared to the peak of “terrorist deaths” in 2014, “the largest falls in the number of deaths occurred in Iraq, Nigeria, and Pakistan, with falls of 6,466, 5,950, and 912 deaths respectively”. “Bo

Nigeria, others to lag as latest mobile technologies adoption soar By Mod- [ Update ] Ericsson Nigeria and other sub Saharan African countries have been predicted to still retain second generation (2G) mobile technology in the next five years when other regions of the world would have migrated to newest technology, according to Ericsson Mobility report released recently. Responding to its forecast that 2G will remain relevant in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa, Nora Wahby, head of West Africa, Ericsson Middle East and Africa, who released the report in Lagos, attributed this to none availability of smartphones for fast technologies such as 3G, 4G and LTE in the region. “Penetration of smartphones required for higher technologies are still low in this region and will continue for few more years to come. This has also affected subscription of 4G, LTE services,” she said. Oladipo Raji, chief executive officer, InfraFocus Partners, explained that for 2G
