Jagielka’s Goal Dents Arsenal’s Top-Four Bid

Image
Everton’s English defender Phil Jagielka (4L) celebrates scoring the opening goal during the English Premier League football match between Everton and Arsenal at Goodison Park in Liverpool, north west England on April 7, 2019. Oli SCARFF / AFP  Arsenal were haunted by their dismal away form yet again as Phil Jagielka gave Everton a 1-0 victory that dented the Gunners’ Premier League top-four bid on Sunday. Jagielka was only drafted into Everton’s starting line-up at the last minute due to an illness suffered by Michael Keane. The Everton defender made the most of his call-up with the game’s only goal in the early stages at Goodison Park. It was another away-day flop for Arsenal, who maintained their wretched record as the only club in the top four divisions of English football not to have kept a clean sheet on their travels this season. Unai Emery’s side remain fourth in the Premier League, but they are ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea only on goal difference as the race ...

Shall we help the President?

Image
Nigerians are a complex and complicated people where corruption is the norm of the day. It is not only in government circles but in the private and even in our family units. It’s so embedded in the fabric of our psyche. Buhari In order to eradicate it or bring it to the barest minimum level, it needs a total turn round in the way we see, do and perceive things. Imagine this scenario. A house wife goes to the market to purchase foodstuffs and she makes something for herself. Have you ever imagined why our roads are in a sorry state? Because the contractors cut corners, by using sub-standard materials and also settling those awarding the contracts. Why are trailers and tankers still parked on the Apapa axis of Lagos state, despite the control measures put in place by the military. Because of compromise on the part of the personnel. What all these boil down to, is that the President, Muhammadu Buhari in all his wisdom cannot do it alone. Don’t get me wrong. I am neither an APC or...

Pep Guardiola’s men will return to Wembley to face either Watford or Wolves on May 18 for what they hope will be the chance to clinch the first ever domestic treble in English football history. City looked set for an easy afternoon when Jesus opened the scoring after just four minutes, but never hit top gear with one eye on their Champions League quarter-final, first leg at Tottenham on Tuesday. And Brighton were left to rue a controversial decision not to send-off Kyle Walker just after the half hour mark for ...

The children of Jamal Khashoggi have received millions of dollars’ worth of property, one-off payments and large monthly allowances as compensation for the killing of the Saudi journalist, a source familiar with the matter told CNN last week. Jamal Khashoggi The family could also receive tens of millions of dollars in “blood money” payments following the trial of Khashoggi’s alleged killers in Riyadh. All told, the family could stand to collect more than $70 million in cash and assets, the source estimated. The Saudi government would contend that these payments are intended to make amends, but the expectation is that in exchange for the money, they won’t publicly criticize the royal family over Khashoggi’s death, the source said. Khashoggi’s four children have each been gifted homes worth as much as 15 million Saudi riyals (around $4 million), the source said. Salah, who as the eldest son handles the family’s relations with the government, has been given a large home in Je...

Image
Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has said he can be president of Nigeria. Speaking with The Sun, Lawal said the constitution did not limit the presidency to any part of the country. He was addressing the issue of zoning the 2023 presidency outside the north. “Every part of Nigeria can produce a president, a competent one. “I know so many. Being a cosmopolitan man, I know Igbos not less than ten that can successfully run this country; I know Yorubas that can do, I know Ijaws that can do, I know Hausas that can do, I know even Kilba. “Hey myself, my friend, I can be president of this country. I consider myself quite competent to do so from a small tribe of 300,000 people. There are so many such tribes that can produce good, competent leaders all over Nigeria. “Even if it is in the north, if we say the north-west has produced a presidential candidate, the south-west had produced one, I don’t see why the north-central cannot produ...
