The party stated that by granting an ex parte order stopping the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from concluding the governorship election in Bauchi State, Justice Inyang violated Section 87(11) of the Electoral Act, which states that “no court has the power or jurisdiction to stop any election pending the determination of a suit.” This was contained in a statement signed and forwarded to DAILY POST on Wednesday by PDP’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan. Disney To Acquire 21st Fox Century Today

Image
Everything you need to live well Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday it would close its blockbuster deal for the film and television assets of 21st Century Fox on March 20, a deal likely to reshape the media-entertainment landscape. The $71 billion deal gives Disney the prized 20th Century Fox studios and other media production units. It also vastly reduces the empire of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his family, who are planning a “new Fox” that includes the US broadcast network and the Fox News Channel. The Disney-Fox deal comes amid a shifting media sector where the “legacy” producers controlling Hollywood are seeking to fend off competition from emerging streaming firms including Netflix and Amazon. Disney is expected to launch a rival streaming platform later this year, and Apple is expected to launch its own service as well. The deal gives Disney the 20th Century Fox studios along with a controlling stake in Hulu, the online platform created by media groups to challenge

Nigeria vs Seychelles: Rohr reveals why he doesn’t invite NPFL players to Super Eagles

Image
Ahead of Friday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles, head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has explained why it is difficult for him to call up players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). Rohr, speaking with SportingLife, said the domestic league is not professionally run, while most of the clubs lack the necessary infrastructures. He also admitted the players lack exposure to quality training and match conditions. “I can tell you that it is not easy for the local players when you see the conditions they have to play. Playing on old astro-turf, not able to play for up to six months because the league is on break, how will they be fit and be able to compete with the players from Europe, who have the best competitions for training, playing, organization, health and so on. “So it is not easy for the local players, but we have four in the team now because I invited two from the Under-20, the captain and the best defender. Recall that we reported that the 8-year-old Nigerian homeless refugee child who was recently crowned a New York Chess Champion, moved to the US with his family to escape Boko Haram, a terrorist group responsible for atrocious attacks. For independent INEC: Adopt judicial model (2)

Image
By Afe Babalola Last week I discussed the role of the electoral body in ensuring the election of leaders who will transform the country. I identified a truly independent and impartial electoral body as an absolute necessity in bringing this about. This week I intend to highlight changes that can be adopted to make the electoral body more independent. AS stated earlier, Nigeria operates the independent model of electoral body and it is for this reason that the name of Nigeria’s electoral commission contains the word “Independent”. However, many continue to argue that it is only independent in name. Yet an electoral commission of this model is expected to be independent of the executive body and be able to manage its own budget. Other countries which operate the independent election commission model include Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the United Kingdom. Other models as identified last week include t

The teenager revealed he tries to model his game on the former Borussia Dortmund man and has benefited from some sessions with Unai Emery’s first team. “I am the sort of striker that likes to play on the shoulder of the last defender and make runs behind them, similar to the way that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang plays,’ he told Arsenal.com “I’ve trained

Combating piracy on Nigerian waters

Image
Globally, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) Piracy Reporting Centre, based in Singapore, recorded 201 incidents of maritime piracy and armed robbery in 2018, up from 180 in 2017. The Gulf of Guinea remained increasingly dangerous for seafarers as reports of attacks in waters between the Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo more than doubled in 2018. The expansion of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea poses a dire threat to local economies, potentially undermining what little stability currently exists in the region. Oil revenue, which many countries in the region rely upon, is seriously threatened by pirate activity; seven per cent of Nigeria’s oil wealth is believed lost due to such criminality. Additionally, instability in the Gulf has sharply decreased revenue collected from trade; Benin, whose economy depends on taxing ships entering the Port of Cotonou, has experienced a 70 per cent decline in shipping activity due to piracy. Furthermore, as piracy drives up insu

The dramatic endorsements were seen and perceived as one of the requirements which any governorship candidate must get in order to become the next Imo State governor. Nonetheless, the 37-year-old claimed his comments had been twisted by the French media. “I made a video, as a joke as a friend, and the French media, they take it because I used the word ‘pede’, so they translated as I am against the gay people,” Evra said on Twitter. “I am not homophobic. I love everybody. So if I offend someone or I hurt someone, I already apologised. “You have to be free for whatever you want to do in life, I will never judge anyone.
