Senate passes bill prohibiting gas flaring

ABUJA- THE Senate, yesterday, passed the bill for an Act to Prohibit Gas Flaring( prohibition and punishment) in Nigeria. The bill, which passed second reading in 2017, also contains provisions on inaccurate data collation and submission by the lessee, gas flaring fee, powers of the minister to make regulations, as well as repeal of the Associated  Gas Re-Injection Act 2004. Senate The Senate has approved that any person who is acting on behalf of a licensee to supply inaccurate data to the Department of Petroleum Resources or to any other person duly empowered by a lawful authority, commits an offense and shall be liable upon conviction to a fine of N10 million or to imprisonment for a maximum term of six months or to both fine and imprisonment. The Senate also approved that where the Minister grants an extension to an  exemption granted under section 4(1)(b) of the Act,  the fee payable by the lessee or licensee under sub-section(1) of this section shall attract a surcharge

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that his team would “stand up” and fight for the Premier League title after their dreams of a quadruple were ended by Wednesday’s dramatic exit from the Champions League. Senate rejects bill to phase out petrol cars, adopt electric ones

The Nigerian senate, during plenary on Wednesday, rejected a bill seeking to phase out the use of petrol-powered cars in Nigeria and adopt those powered by electricity. Sponsor of the bill, Senator representing Bayelsa East, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce had argued that it would be cheaper to use electric-powered cars than the current petrol cars being used in Nigeria. He said Nigeria has been spending over N1trillion naira subsidizing petrol usage in Nigeria, declaring that with electric cars, fuel subsidy would be a thing of the past. He said industrialised nations have already begun phasing out petrol cars. According to him, “Combustion engine cars have continued to cause deaths through uncontrolled pollution.” “Secondly, we have been spending over N1 trillion annually subsidising fuel in this country. Sliding freight rates send more big bulk ships to scrapyards

Soldiers apprehend kidnappers, rescue hostage in ondo

The 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, says its troops deployed in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State have apprehended five kidnappers said to have been terrorising people of the area. This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure on Wednesday by Capt. Victor Olukoya, the brigade’s Assistant Director,  Public Relations. Olukoya said that the troops made the arrest during a raid on the kidnappers’ hideout at Jugbere village in Owo Local Government. He explained that the operation followed a tip off from some members of the public that suspected kidnappers had abducted nine farmers in a farm belonging to one Mr Godwin Ugu. “During the raid, the troops were able to rescue five of the hostages while four others had escaped from the kidnappers den before the troops arrived. “The rescued hostages and some of the suspects, who sustained minor injuries, are presently receiving first aid treatment at the 32 Artillery Brigade Medical Centre,” the brigade’s spok

The All Progressives Congress governor in Ekiti state, Fayemi has had his victory upheld by the Supreme Court.
