UN, INEC urge better security over north-east crisis, polls Casting of vote during a Nigerian election. Photo The Guardian The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Edward Kallon, has expressed concern over the deteriorating state of insecurity in the north-east, saying thousands of civilians have fled due to Boko Haram attacks. Kallon expressed his worry in a statement released by Head of Communication, Samantha Newport, in Maiduguri yesterday. He disclosed that the December 26, 2018 clash between troops and the Islamist sect in Baga town triggered massive displacement of people. “The impact of the recent fighting on innocent civilians is devastating and has created a humanitarian tragedy,” he said. He noted also that the recent attack on Monguno displaced over 58, 000 people. “It is heart-wrenching to see so many of these people living in congested camps or sleeping outside with no shelter,” he said. Painful tales of drug abuse, depression, suicide and call for urgent action Director General, NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye<br />Photo: NAN The recent household drug use survey revealed that prescription drug abuse is a fast-emerging public health problem that has led to increasing poly-drug use amongst drug dependent persons. It is undermining all efforts to deepen socio-economic development and is associated with crime and lawlessness. Too many parties spoil the cook [FILE PHOTO] Election Poll Nigerian politicians are presenting Nigerians with a plethora of choices in the coming general elections. As of now, the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, has stated that more than 70 candidates would be vying for the presidency. I guess there may be more than 1000 candidates running for the office of governors. Those vying for the Senate, the House of Representatives and the Houses of Assembly may run into tens of thousands. You can just imagine the kind of harvests the political parties are making in this season of summer when the harvest is big and the farmers are plentiful and the market of politics is roaring at the neighbourhood. If the truth be told, politics is the only business in town or else if you are lucky to own a Pentecostal church or you are in league with some lucky imams with unpronounceable names spelt in classical Arabic. There is no way the electorates would not be confused with 7
