Strengths, Weaknesses And Fears: Lens On 2019 Presidential Election

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar As a political scientist I have taken time to study Nigeria election 12 years back, so I can do a comparative analysis of the forthcoming election in 10 days time. In 2007, the PDP won in 2011, the PDP also won while in 2015, the APC defeated the PDP after retaining power for 16 years and winning the election 5 consecutive times,1999-2011. During the campaigns of 2015, the PDP and other watchers of Nigeria Political parties accused the opposition candidate of dictatorship tendencies while the APC accused the PDP of bad governance. The question begging for an answer now is, "have they both parties proven to be different today?" Let me delve into succinct analysis of the strength of both the APC and the PDP in 2019. STRENGTHS OF APC Without doubt, APC's highest strengths are: 1. INCUMBENCY: The power of incumbent is one of the key factors in African politics. Drawing lessons from Nigeria, Ghana,Gambia, Liberia ...

The deity we now worship

Onnoghen These are interesting times when the suspended Chief Justice of the Federation is also in search of justice. Justice Walter Onnoghen is facing trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Abuja, for alleged infringement of the law. He is accused of not fully disclosing all his assets after he had taken office as CJN. Among the assets undisclosed is said to be the sum of three million dollars lying innocently in a domiciliary account. Onnoghen is a powerful man who is capable of defending himself. Some of his supporters, claiming they are defending the Constitution, have gone on the streets to demonstrate. But the man himself knows the answer to his dilemma lies in the court of law. In the past in Nigeria, power and money use to live on separate streets. Now they dwell in the same house. The youths of Nigeria have come to realise that the road to sudden wealth is through political power. They have seen how humble people, once they get elected into the Senate, Hou...

The Judiciary, its own enemy (2)

Image
By Mohammed Adamu I CONCLUDE  this series with an excerpt from a previous piece titled ‘The Judiciary Waiting For Buhari’ written about four years ago (May 19, 2015) and a Postscript from another ‘On Justice Onnoghen’ (Feb. 09, 2017). File: Lawyers This mostly chronicles the revelations of one of the Chief Justices of Nigeria, the late Justice Dahiru Musdapher whose eleven month reform-frenzied tenure was about the most eventful, most revealing of the sordid entrails of this otherwise esoteric institution. …none (had) captured (the rot in the Nigerian Judiciary) any better than the eminent jurist, Justice Kayode Esho, in a memo on the Musdapher Reform Programme where he said: “There has been no time in the history of the judiciary of this nation that the institution has sunk this low”. And Justice Musdapher it was who had the rare courage to break the yoke of judicial esoterism by publicly confessing to serious challenges bothering particularly on the ethical and mora...

Unbelievable! Man Set To Sue His Own Parents For Giving Birth To Him 'Without His Consent'

Image
Raphael Samuel in one of the posts on his Facebook page, Nihilanand, where he posts anti-natalist material suggesting that parents are 'hypocrites' A man is planning to sue his parents in India for giving birth to him 'without his consent'. Raphael Samuel said he had a 'great relationship' with his parents but has compared having children to 'kidnapping and slavery'. The 27-year-old from Mumbai is an 'anti-natalist' who believes it is wrong to put an unwilling child through the 'rigmarole' of life for the pleasure of its parents. The anti-natalist movement is gaining traction in India as younger people resist social pressure to have children.  Speaking to The Print Samuel said: 'I love my parents, and we have a great relationship, but they had me for their joy and their pleasure. 'My life has been amazing, but I don't see why I should put another life through the rigamarole of school and finding a career, especi...
