Nigeria election shift: US lawmaker blames Buhari, associates, tells Trump what to do

Rep. Chris Smith, immediate past chairman of the United States House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, has spoken on the postponement of Nigeria elections. His reaction was contained in a statement he signed on Monday. The statement posted on his website reads: “Responsibility for the delay of Nigeria’s presidential election lays squarely with President Muhammadu Buhari and those close to him. “Actions in advance of the election — including removal of Supreme Court Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen and arson attacks on Independent National Electoral Commission offices in opposition strongholds — are undermining confidence that this election and subsequent gubernatorial elections will be free and fair. “At a minimum, the presidential election must meet the 2015 standard, which saw a peaceful transfer of power and a statement by the then-sitting president that all bloodshed must be avoided.” Rep. Smith also called upon the Trump Administration and the State Department to f

Poll shift hits exchange rate, stock market loses N196 billion

The financial services sector yesterday reacted negatively to the uncertainty in the nation’s political environment as investors priced in the risks of election postponement on the stock market and exchange rate. The development came just as analysts polled by The Guardian at the weekend predicted that investors and financial transactions would plummet as a first reaction. Specifically, investors lost N196 billion from share depreciation across all segments of the listed equities, even as analysts from Afrinvest Securities Limited said the bearish run would be sustained this week due to uncertainties surrounding the polls. Before the postponement, there was a positive sentiment across board, as the market rallied in about seven consecutive days, with investors making up their mind over whoever emerges, since all the fundamentals of the market looked good. For instance, at the end of transactions last week Tuesday, the All-Share Index (ASI) had gained 680.44 absolute poin

Like a pin punched to a balloon, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, broke the heart of millions across the world with the following words: “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible.” The words that followed didn’t matter any longer. For those who denied sleep to lay a burning rumour to rest, “no longer feasible” was all they needed to confront their worst fears, that the ‘fake news’ that started flying around since 10:00p.m. on the eve of the election was i

Nigeria’s electoral watchdog postponed presidential and parliamentary elections for one week, just hours before polls were due to open. The two main political parties swiftly condemned the move and accused each other of orchestrating the delay as a way of manipulating the vote. Luis TATO / AFP Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Akwa Ibom State branch, has blamed the abrupt postponement of the federal elections billed for Saturday, February 16, on inadequate preparation on the part of the electoral umpire. It expressed disappointment over the development, which it said negatively impacted the country’s economy. The chairman, Pius Ntuen, in a statement, faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for inadequate preparation, urging it to ensure that all personnel, materials and other logistics were deployed for the
