Cars On Nigerian Roads Hit 11.8 Million In One Year

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its latest figures indicated that there were about 11.8 million licensed cars on Nigeria’s roads as at Q4 2018, compared to 11.6 million in the corresponding period of 2017. According to the report, Nigeria witnessed a 2 per cent increase in the number of licensed cars Year- on -Year; that is between Q4 of 2018 and Q4 2017, respectively. The NBS report disclosed that as at Q4 2018, commercial cars recorded the highest numbers of licensed cars on Nigeria’s roads, having made up 41% of the total cars. Diplomatic cars recorded the least number of licensed cars, constituting of just 0.05% of the total licensed cars in Nigeria. “With an estimated population of 198 million, Nigeria’s vehicle per population ratio is 0.06. Similarly, the Bureau’s report shows that 630,868 drivers’ licenses were produced in 2018”, the report said. Nigerian passenger dies on Delta Air Line Atlanta-Lagos flight

A Nigerian passenger on Delta Air Lines Flight DL54 travelling from Atlanta, United States to Lagos was on Monday afternoon found unresponsive before landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. The 54-year-old passenger (name withheld), who was ill before boarding the flight, died three minutes before the aircraft touched down at the airport. The spokesperson for the MMIA Police Command, Lagos, DSP Joseph Alabi, who confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos said the command was notified of the development after the aircraft landed at the airport by the airline officials. NECA seeks policy stability in new administration

NECA house The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), has called on the Federal Government to ensure sustained commitment on the stability of economic policies, social investment programmes and deepening of engagement with the private sector in President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term. While stating some of the business implications of Buhari’s re-election, NECA advised that issues of politics should be set aside while good governance takes a centre stage in the new administration. The Director-General of NECA, Timothy Olawale, who said the Association does not expect any deviation from the administrations policies, argued that concerted efforts must be made to revive moribund industries, support struggling enterprises, create a responsible regulatory regime and focus on inclusive growth for the rapid development of the country. 82-year old Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika drops bid for fifth term in office

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has postponed the April 18th presidential elections and said he will not seek a fifth term in office.  President Bouteflika's candidacy had provoked mass protests across Algeria over the past few weeks. He has led Algeria for 20 years but has been rarely seen in public since he suffered a stroke in 2013.  No new date for the election was set but a cabinet reshuffle will happen soon, a statement in Mr Bouteflika's name said.  Meanwhile, Algeria's Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia announced his resignation and was replaced by Interior Minister Noureddine Bedoui, who has been tasked with forming a new government, the official APS news agency reported.
