Three things we learned from Tottenham v Ajax

Image
Ajax beat Tottenham 1-0 in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday. Here AFP Sport looks at three things we learned from the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium: Pochettino comes back down to earth Speaking ahead of the first leg, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino challenged his players to "set your dreams to infinity and beyond" as he looked to lead the club to their first European Cup final. But Pochettino's amusing decision to reference the catchphrase of Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear wasn't the most significant of his pre-match comments. Complaining about Tottenham having to play West Ham on Saturday while Ajax benefitted from having their domestic match postponed, Pochettino admitted his players looked "stressed and fatigued" during the 1-0 defeat against West Ham. It was the same again against Ajax as the Dutch youngsters looked far more energetic and composed, while Tottenham were largely a damp squib in their fi

Champions League: Lionel Messi scores twice as Barcelona routs unlucky Liverpool 3-0

Image
Barcelona is just 90 minutes away from its first UEFA Champions League final in four years after beating plucky Liverpool 3-0 Wednesday in the opening match of its two-leg, total-goals semifinal series on two goals by Lionel Messi — including the 600th of the Argentine’s otherworldly career — and another from former Reds striker Luis Suarez. Barca, which won the last of its five European titles in 2015, rode Suarez’s 26th minute strike, which held up as the winner. And Messi punished them severely for it. Suarez, who scored 69 times in 110 Premier League games for Liverpool between 2011 and 2014, put the hosts ahead after running onto a seeing-eye through-pass from Jordi Alba. A sliding Suarez, who had timed his run perfectly, needed only the slightest touch to to direct the ball past v

Champions League: Rio Ferdinand blames one Liverpool player after 3-0 loss to Barcelona

Image
Former Manchester United star, Rio Ferdinand has slammed Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk’s “static” defending that led to Barcelona taking the lead against the Reds. Luis Suarez opened the scoring for the Catalan giants in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday. Suarez found space in front of Van Dijk to fire home the opener, and Ferdinand thinks Van Dijk should have done better. “Virgil van Dijk here, he is at fault,” said Ferdinand on BT Sport. “He can see Suarez there, he is pointing where he wants it. It’s not rocket science. It’s right in front of him. “That’s your man, the number nine on the back of his shirt, static. Virgil van Dijk there, static. And that’s criminal in that position. “He has got to be Matip’s eyes and ears. Move Matip to where you want to maybe stop the ball in the first instance but if not, you have to go with your man there. “And he will be disappointed with that I am sure.”
