The Lagos State Government has stopped the reopening of worship centers initially scheduled for Friday, June 19 (mosques) and Sunday, June 21 (churches). Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the decision at a press briefing on Tuesday. According to him, the development became necessary as a result of the rising cases of COVID-19 in the state. On Monday, Nigeria recorded 573 new coronavirus infections, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 16,658. Of the new infections, Lagos reported the highest figures with 216 new cases, bringing the total number of cases in the state 7,319. Consequently, the state has remained the epicentre of infections in the country, closely followed by the FCT with 1,264 and Kano state with 1,158. Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases surpassed 16,000 on Sunday as Gombe State had the highest number of infections – 73 – for the day. This was revealed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in a late-night tweet on its official handle where it added that the country had 403 new cases of the virus. According to the agency, Lagos State trails Gombe in reported cases for the day with 68 new infections, followed by Kano State where 46 more people got the virus. Other states with new COVID-19 cases are: Edo (36); FCT (35); Nasarawa (31);  Kaduna (17);  Oyo (16); Abia (15) and Delta (13). A further breakdown of the latest figures from the Federal Government agency showed that they were new cases of the disease in the following states: Borno (13); Plateau (8); Niger (7); Rivers (7); Enugu (6); Ogun (6); Kebbi (3); Ondo (1); Anambra (1) and Imo (1). ). A total of 14 states and the US territory of Puerto Rico have recorded their worst week yet for new coronavirus infections, with Texas hitting a record high in  Covid-19  hospitalizations, all while restrictions to curb the pandemic are being relaxed across America. A resurgence in new infections has been detected in states including  Florida ,  Texas  and  California , as authorities allow certain businesses and public places to reopen. According to  data tracked by the Washington Post , since the start of June, 14 states and Puerto Rico have experienced their highest seven-day average of new  coronavirus  cases since the pandemic began. The states are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah. File: Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu The Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has tested positive to COVID-19, and has gone into isolation. This was revealed in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Abia State, John Kalu on Monday. The statement noted that Governor Ikpeazu had sent his sample for a COVID-19 test on May 30th and had directed members of the State Executive Council (EXCO) and the inter-ministerial committee on COVID-19 to do the same. According to the statement, the Governor’s first test result returned negative on Tuesday, 2nd June 2020. More than 10,000 people  have been arrested around the US during the protests, as police forces regularly use pepper spray, rubber bullets, teargas and batons on protesters, media and bystanders. Several major US cities have  enacted  curfews in an  attempt  to stop demonstrations and curb unrest. Jarah Gibson was arrested while non-violently protesting in Atlanta, Georgia, on 1 June. “The police were there from the jump and literally escorted us the whole march,” said Gibson. She said around 7.30pm, ahead of Atlanta’s 9pm city-wide curfew, police began boxing in protesters.
