Ighalo, Mata & more can deliver Solskjaer's first trophy - but Man Utd stars must be spared Europa League strain

The Red Devils boss has the opportunity to secure his first piece of silverware in charge of the club but it's his fringe players who now must step in Manchester United  secured their  Champions League  status for next season just over a week ago at the King Power Stadium. With a 2-0 victory over  Leicester City  in the Premier League, the club ensured they would not be forced to win the  Europa League  in order to re-qualify for the top competition. That's why celebrations were perhaps tinged with a slight sense of relief.  After a long season, and a new campaign coming quickly on the horizon, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s players headed off on a short break and the focus can be solely on winning a trophy. It would be easy for United to write off the rest of the Europa League, a second-tier European competition played in an empty stadium, but  success in Germany would cap off a successful first full season in charge for Solskjaer. Champions League qualification has always been the pr

Manchester United attack has clear advantage over Liverpool FC and Man City

Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford have all had excellent seasons for United  (Image: PAUL ELLIS/AFP via Getty Images) If Mason Greenwood can find the back of the net three more times during  United's  Europa League run this month he will propel himself, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial into the record books. United haven't had three players all score 20 goals in a season since 1964/65, when Dennis Law, David Here and John Connelly were providing the firepower, but if  Greenwood  - currently on 17 - can edge his way past that marker he will join Rashford and Martial - both on 22 - in surpassing that tally. Such landmarks don't automatically make this trio United's best in more than 50 years, of course. Their total together this season is 61, a figure comfortably surpassed by Wayne Rooney,  Cristiano Ronaldo  and Carlos Tevez in 2007/08, for example. And crucially the goals scored by Law, Herd and Connelly and Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez were enough to

Manchester United passed up chance to sign Pulisic, reveals ex-Red Devils scout

The Chelsea winger's career trajectory could have turned out differently had an Old Trafford official's glowing recommendations been acted upon Former  Manchester United  scout Jorge Alvial has revealed that the Red Devils passed up the chance to sign Christian Pulisic when he was still a youngster on  Borussia Dortmund 's books. Pulisic rose through the youth ranks at Dortmund before graduating to the senior squad in 2016, and went on to score 19 goals in 127 appearances for the club. Chelsea  were impressed enough to invest £58 million ($75m) into the United States international's potential last year, which he has gradually paid back over the course of an encouraging first year in the Premier League. Pulisic has contributed 10 goals and 10 assists to the Blues' cause in his first 33 outings for the club,  earning comparisons with club legend Eden Hazard , who joined  Real Madrid  in 2019. The 21-year-old is already being tipped for a bright future at the very high

Mourinho takes swipe at Fernandes for Manchester United penalty record

Image
The Tottenham boss has aimed a subtle dig at a fellow Portuguese and the Red Devils after seeing another key decision go their way at the weekend Jose Mourinho has taken a light-hearted swipe at Bruno Fernandes for his  Manchester United  penalty record, joking that the midfielder "had about 20 to score" in the second half of the season. United set a new Premier League record for the most penalties won in a single campaign  when Anthony Martial was brought down in the box during a crunch clash with Leicester on Sunday. Fernandes, a €55 million (£50m/$65m) January signing, stepped up to convert the Red Devils' 14th spot-kick of 2019-20, which set them on their way to a 2-0 victory at the King Power Stadium. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men secured third place and  Champions League  qualification as a result, while extending their unbeaten run in the top flight to 14 matches. United have picked up more points than any other Premier League side since Fernandes' arrival fro
