Bubble Boys! Inside Man Utd's bizarre preparations for Europa League semi-final with Sevilla

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are bidding to make their first final of the season in the most surreal of circumstances in Cologne, Germany In normal circumstances, Cologne in western  Germany  would be full of  Manchester United  fans ducking in and out of the bars and restaurants in the shadows of the city’s gothic cathedral. However, this is 2020. The coronavirus pandemic has changed everything. Normal circumstances no longer exist. Aside from a handful of United fans who flew out on Sunday to be in Cologne for the quarter-final clash against Copenhagen, and a giant replica trophy which could be found on the banks of the Rhine, you wouldn’t know there’s a football festival taking place here. Walking around the heavily locked-down RheinEnergieStadion on Monday, as  United faced Copenhagen in the quarter-finals,  locals were going about their daily tasks, exercising in the park and training on an athletics track. Arewa group begs Nigerian government to ban porn websites from cyberspace

Image
File Photo The Arewa Youth Consultative Council (AYCC) has asked the Federal Government to block ‘sexual and immorally-related’ websites from the Nigerian cyberspace. In a statement signed by the group’s spokesperson, Muhammad Ibrahim, on Friday, August 14, 2020, AYCC said it is concerned by the exposure of Nigerian youths to ‘sexual contamination’. The group said the exposure of Nigerian youths to sexual content is fueling a culture of indecency, immorality and increasing cases of sexual misbehaviours. AYCC, in the letter addressed to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, called on the government to enforce a strict monitoring policy that will remove pornographic content. “We resolved to write to you as concerned citizens to call on your quick intervention in blocking sexual and immorality related sites in the Nigerian cyberspace to sanitise the reckless behaviour and continuous immoral engagements among youths for sustainable development and progress of ou

He's no Neymar or Aguero but Gabriel Jesus is a unique Manchester City match-winner

Brazilian striker ready to step up for Pep Guardiola's side in the Champions League after leading the way in Real Madrid victories When the referee blew the final whistle of  Manchester City 's  Champions League  last-16 second-leg victory over  Real Madrid , there were no wild celebrations from Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian slumped onto his haunches, shattered after a non-stop performance, before punching the ground; a slight celebration to mark a job well done. Jesus is not the skilful, quicksilver superstar that many would like him to be, but he's exactly the player that Pep Guardiola wants. In his home country more than anywhere else, there is a frustration that the 23-year-old is not the type of flamboyant striker that has always decorated the national tea A lot of the time, it felt like the only limit to his influence on a game was the brief the manager entrusted to him. Signed as a defensive midfielder from  Barcelona , the Ivorian continued to inch forward until he w

Nigeria: Lagos to promote students to next classes using continuous assessments

Image
Students in Lagos State Government-owned schools will be promoted to the next classes using continuous assessments.“(For) the reopening (of schools) we’re doing, we are working with the Federal Government so I will not unilaterally say that we are doing this or that but we are planning,” Adefisayo said during a programme on Channels Television on Thursday. She continues, “There are two scenarios, if we don’t have third term, it means that we push next session to next year. “Each one has its own complexity but we will do what is best for the students. But if the students do not do the third term examination, they will use their CA (continuous assessment).” Both private and public schools in the state were shut in March after Lagos State accounted for Nigeria’s first coronavirus case. Currently, Nigeria has 48,116 confirmed cases of the virus and Lagos State is leading as the epicentre with 15,984 as of Wednesday. Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had warned severally that continue

FG dumps plastic ID cards for digital ID card

The Federal government has moved from national identification and registration of citizens via the card-based version to strictly digital. The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, disclosed this to state house correspondents today August 13 after he and Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, had a meeting with President Buhari in the statehouse. Aregbesola, Pantami and the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engineer Aliyu A. Aziz, had met with President Buhari to submit the report of the Committee on Citizens Data Management and Harmonisation which was presided over by Aregbesola. Briefing State House Correspondents after the report submission, the Interior Minister said the new direction in citizen identification will include individual DNA samples, adding that the card-based would merely be for convenience. “The card is just for convenience. The real thing is the number you have, with that number you are on the d

Manchester United have finally answered Harry Kane transfer question

Image
The Tottenham Hotspur striker has been heavily linked with Man Utd in the past but Solskjaer now has an answer. There is a fair amount of symmetry in the plights of Anthony Martial and Harry Kane right now and it doesn't reflect overly well on Jose Mourinho. In fact, a simple exchange between two former  Manchester United  players in the BT Sport studio, following  the 1-0 win  over FC Copenhagen, summed up the situation succinctly. Robin Van Persie,  asked about Martial and how far he has come  under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, turned to  Paul Scholes  and remarked innocently: "He was struggling under Mourinho right?" Scholes' reply was typically deadpan: "Who wasn't?" The transformation of Martial under Solskjaer is simply incredible. This is a player who announced himself to Old Trafford with an outrageous solo effort against Liverpool as a 19-year-old; someone whose talent has never in doubt, but who stagnated during two-and-a-half crucial years of his c
