Negative Effects of Sitting Too Long and Possible Solutions
To sit means to be in a particular position in which the upper body is standing upright while the legs are supported by some object or kept straight to the floor. Living a sitting lifestyle can cause damage to your health.
Humans are created to stand upright and your heart works perfectly like that. The less sitting or lying down increases your better chance of living a healthy life.
Below are the negative effects sitting or living a sedentary lifestyle;
It weakens your legs and gluteals
Gluteals are one of the three large skeletal muscles that make up the buttock and help the thigh for locomotion which aids the body for walking and stabilization and if these muscles are weak due to sitting for a long period of time it causes weakness and it affect your strain during exercise.
It causes stiff neck and shoulder pain
Much time spent over a computer keyboard can lead to pain in your neck and shoulder region and these can be cause via poor posture.
It causes heart disease
Discoveries have shown that sitting for a long period of time can cause cardiovascular disease. Research has also shown that people who sit for long period of time have a high percent risk of suffering from heart attack or stroke.
It can cause diabetes
Research has shown that even lying down in bed for about five days can cause rise in insulin resistance in your body, thus, increasing your blood sugar level and this have a high percent risk of diabetes disease.
It causes back pain and hip joint problems
Poor posture causes back pain while sitting. It also affects your hip flexor muscle thereby affecting your hip joint. Poor posture can also lead to compression in the discs of your spine which cause premature degeneration thereby affecting the health of your spine.
It can cause brain damage
When sitting for a long time, the brain tends to lacks sufficient blood and oxygen which cause the brain to function slowly and this reduce the brain power. If the brain continues to be in this state the brain tends to lack enough glucose energy which may result to the damage of brain cells.
Possible solutions to sedentary lifestyle (sitting too long)
Below are some ways of preventing a sedentary lifestyle;
It’s advisable to stand up while you read reports and email even in your office.
While in your office always use the speaker of your phone for conference call and walk round the room during calls.
Always exercise for about 60-70 minute daily in other to keep your body fit.
Always take the stairs instead of taking lift.
Endeavor to park further away from where ever you are going and walk the rest of the way to your office.
Try to participate in indoor activities such as yoga, dancing, swimming at the indoor pool and squash etc.
