Brexit: Bristish minister hopeful deal can be done

British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt said Wednesday that he was hopeful a Brexit deal could be passed by the British parliament if the government’s attorney-general is in a position to change his advice on its implications for the Irish backstop.

“We can get this deal through parliament if we can have a deal where the attorney general can change his advice to parliament.

“That is going to be key to unlocking it,” Hunt said in a video clip posted on Twitter before he traveled to Berlin.

According to Hunt, with vision and statesmanship on both sides, this can be done and I am hopeful it will be.

NAN reports that Prime Minister Theresa May is heading back to Brussels in a last-ditch attempt to save her Brexit deal, as businesses express growing alarm at the U.K.’s looming divorce from the European Union.

The British government sees May’s meeting on Wednesday with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker as a crucial chance to get legally binding changes to the so-called Irish border backstop, which has proved the biggest obstacle to getting a deal.

This week’s talks are to see “whether a way through can be found that could gain the broadest possible support in the U.K. Parliament,” European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas told newsmen.

One EU official said that meant coming up with new language which would enable Cox to change his legal advice about the temporary nature of the backstop.

The League of Patriotic Lawyers has given Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusegun Odumosu, 24 hours to unravel those behind the torture and insertion of pepper into a girl’s private part in Benin City over alleged stealing of a mobile phone.  Chairman of the platform and former Student Union President of the University of Benin, Mr. Abubakar Yesufu, who said this in a statement yesterday, also urged the state Director, Department of State Services, DSS, to be involved in the investigation. A video of the incident, seen by Vanguard yesterday, showed the girl being stripped naked by a group of people, who inserted pepper into her private parts for allegedly stealing a phone.
