INEC office on fire in Anambra
The office of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, in Awka, the Anambra State capital is currently on fire.
DAILY POST observes that helpless staff of the commission and other people gathered at the scene to watch the raging fire doing damage to the property within the office.
The fire inside the Anambra State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, started at about 2:10 pm.
The fire allegedly started from a container bearing election materials dispatched to the centre earlier.
Attempt to speak with the Anambra INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Nkwachukwu Orji could not yield any result as he did not take his call, nor did the Public Relations Officer of the Commission, Leo Nkedife responding to calls put across to his phone.
DAILY POST gathered that part of the materials in the container are card readers to be used for Saturday’s election.
Update please:
But the head of Public Relations Unit and voter education of the commission, Leo Nkedife confirmed the fire incidence, saying that he has also been told so.
“I am not in the office, but I have been called and told of the fire, and the story is that part of the office that got burnt is containing smartcard readers,” he said.
On the cause of the fire, Nkedife remained mum, insisting that he cannot speak on that for now.
The fire started at a time when a good number of staff of the commission had left office to attend a stakeholders meeting organised by the commission to tell the people its level of preparedness for the Saturday election.
A journalist who was invited by the commission to cover the stakeholders meeting which held at Women Development centre, Awka while speaking to DAILY POST on condition of anonymity said the REC left the event hurriedly after he received message of the fire incident.
The source said the event which had media, traditional rulers, leaders of political parties ended abruptly because of the news of the fire.
