AMC threatens to pull 'Walking Dead' production out of Georgia if abortion ban goes through

“The Walking Dead” may be fleeing zombies — and Georgia.

The long-running hit show, arguably the most popular and profitable series filmed in the state, could be headed elsewhere if the controversial fetal heartbeat bill goes into effect in January.

“If this highly restrictive legislation goes into effect, we will reevaluate our activity in Georgia,” AMC Networks said in a statement. “Similar bills — some even more restrictive — have passed in multiple states and have been challenged. This is likely to be a long and complicated fight and we are watching it all very closely.”

The abortion bill, which bans abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, often as early as six weeks into pregnancy, was signed into law by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on May 7 and is set to go into effect on Jan. 1.

“The Walking Dead,” now heading into its tenth season, has filmed in Georgia since its first season, although spinoff “Fear the Walking Dead” has been shot elsewhere and a third, untitled spinoff and the Andrew Lincoln-led movie series are expected to go into production outside the state as well.

AMC joins a number of other networks and services, including Netflix, Disney and CBS, to threaten to pull their productions from Georgia, where more than 400 shows and movies qualified for tax credits in Fiscal Year 2018, which lasted from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.
