Singapore’s supreme court frees Nigerian on death row

The supreme court of Singapore has set free Adili Ejike, a Nigerian sentenced to death for drug trafficking. According to NAN, Akinremi Bolaji, head of Nigeria high commission in Singapore, expressed pleasure over the acquittal of Ejike. Ejike, who was sentenced to death for allegedly importing nearly two-kilogramme of methamphetamine, was on Monday released with no outstanding charges. He was arrested in November 2011 and had been behind bars since then. “Ejike’s freedom from death by hanging by the court made history as the first time such a decision was made in a case involving a Nigerian,” Bolaji was quoted to have said. “The acquittal of Mr Ejike has been termed locally as a miracle of God and I am elated that his freedom from death happened under my watch here as the head of mission.” The envoy said that Ejike’s issue called for serious awareness campaign for Nigerians travelling abroad not to accept to travel with any bag or container that they have not personally ...

Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), got more than he bargained for when he stood in between Ibrahim Muhammad, acting chief justice of Nigeria, and service chiefs at the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday. The APC national chairman had joined Senate President Bukola Saraki; Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives, and the service chiefs who were awaiting the arrival of the president at Eagle Square, Abuja. A military officer had walked up to him and after a short conversation, Oshiomhole relocated just as the officer standing beside Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, filled the space created by his exit. Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, said the president has submitted his forms in compliance with the law that asset declaration must precede his oath-taking slated for Wednesday. Despite his large winning margin, the next four years won’t be easy for the 76-year-old former general. Here are some of the key issues he’ll face while at the helm of Africa’s biggest oil producer and most-populous nation. Growth and Inflation Nigeria’s economic growth has slumped since the 2014 crash in crude prices and Buhari is struggling to revive it. The International Monetary Fund forecasts that gross domestic product will expand 2.1% this year, which would make Nigeria one of Africa’s slowest-growing economies and mean that growth is negative in per capita terms. Inflation is at 11.4% and has been above the central bank’s target of 6% to 9% for almost four years.
