Nigeria call off Nations Cup bonus strike

Image
Nigeria on Tuesday suspended a training strike over unpaid bonuses at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt following last-minute pleas by the country's football officials. The team finally agreed to train in Alexandria, 30 minutes after schedule, after the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) promised to pay a win bonus from their 1-0 victory over Burundi on Saturday, by the end of the week. NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire told AFP "the matter has been resolved", conceding that funds for the tournament had arrived late. "The NFF received part of the money meant for the tournament today and is in the process of converting it to dollars to pay the players and officials", he said. "The only money they’re owed is the win-bonus for the Burundi match", he added. The bonuses were expected to be paid by the NFF after Saturday's game ended. Officials close to the team, who spoke under anonymity, told AFP that following reassurances from the NFF &

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Afenifere, Others Criticize Osinbajo over Insecurity Comment

Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Southern and Middle Belt Forum (SMBF), and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), have criticised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo over a statement credited to him that the level of insecurity in the country was being exaggerated. Osinbajo was quoted as saying during a town hall meeting with Nigerians in New York, United States, on Sunday that “some of the kidnapping stories you read or listen to are simply not true anywhere; some are fuelled by politics.” Afenifere, in a reaction contained in a communique titled: ‘We Can’t Bear It Anymore!’ which was adopted after the organisation’s General Assembly held yesterday at the home of its leader, Chief Rueben Fasoranti, in Akure, Ondo State capital, condemned Vice President Osinbajo for taking such position in far away New York while Nigerians are living daily in palpable fear over insecurity. The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBL), in a separate

Netherlands’ players rejoice after the match The Netherlands reached the women’s World Cup quarter finals for the first time when Lieke Martens’ last gasp penalty earned them a 2-1 victory against Japan on Tuesday. Martens put the Dutch in front after 17 minutes, only for Yui Hasegawa to level on the stroke of halftime, but the forward sent the European champions through with a spot kick in the last minute. Japan, who hit the woodwork twice, dominated the second half but lacked the finishing touch. The Netherlands, taking part in only their second women’s World Cup, will play Italy in Valenciennes on Saturday after the Azzurre beat China 2-0 earlier on Tuesday. The Oranje dominated early on with Vivianne Miedema’s shot hitting the post and they were rewarded in the 17th minute when Martens back-heeled a corner into the net to open the scoring. Japan, however, had their chances with Yuika Sugasawa racing through only to see her curled shot crash against the post.

Goodluck Jonathan fires back at Osinbajo

Image
Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has attacked Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo over some of the issues he (Osinbajo) raised during his visit to the United States of America. Speaking in New York yesterday, Osinbajo had claimed that, “As at 2010, Nigeria had about 112.7million people living in extreme poverty. Nothing in place, there was no Social Investment Programme, there was no social security, no way of taking people out of poverty.” But Jonathan, in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday by his media office and signed by Reno Omokri, said that Osinbajo has taken his lies to the US. He added, “My attention has been drawn to statements by the so-called Pastor Yemi Osinbajo, the deputy to General Muhammadu Buhari, in New York where, as usual, he made false statements to the media in an effort to explain away his non-performance in office. “The statement [by Osinbajo] is a lie and it is very easy to disprove Mr. Osinbajo’s fallacious assertions. “According to

Cameroon were not happy with the decision and Ejangue proceeded to let herself down with an unsavoury moment. As winger Duggan appealed to the referee, Ejangue could be seen spitting on her arm from behind. Duggan felt it and looked disgusted as she turned around and confronted the defender before pointing out the saliva on her arm to the official. Ejangue escaped unpunished, however, leading fans to question why VAR was not brought into action to give her what would have surely been a red card. Nonetheless, Duggan was soon smiling as Steph Houghton made the most of
