Nigeria Election: Five things electorates should know



Nigerians will troop out on Saturday to elect new leaders for another four years.

The general elections will commence with the presidential and National Assembly elections holding on Saturday.

DAILY POST brings you five major information to note as an eligible voter.

Voting Time:

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), polling stations will open voting from 8am to 2pm.

However, voters in the queue before the close of poll at 2pm will be accredited and allowed to vote.

Card readers would read from 8am to 10pm, after 10 pm card, readers would automatically shut down.

NOTE: INEC Chairman, however, noted that the timing is not rigid as allowance will be made for adjustments till the last person on the queue has voted provided the person is on the queue before 2 pm.

Number of Presidential Candidates:

Seventy-three political parties are fielding candidates for the presidential election, though a number of candidates have pulled out of the race.

There are also many parties contesting the 109 Senate seats and 360 positions at the House of Representatives.

The five major presidential contenders are:

President Muhammadu Buhari- All Progressives Congress, APC.

Atiku Abubakar – The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Fela Durotoye -Alliance for New Nigeria, ANN

Omoyele Sowore – Africa Action Congress, AAC

Kingsley Moghalu -Young Progressives Party, YPP.

Those Eligible to participate in the voting process?

Any prospective voter must be a Nigerian citizen, be 18 years and above, possess a permanent voter card (PVC) and be in the voter register where he/she is assigned to vote.

WHERE TO VOTE:

INEC says no one will be allowed to vote at a polling unit other than the one where he/she registered and got accredited.

Offenses Voters must not make at polling units:

1.No shouting of slogans concerning the election, or in support of any party, No one should be in possession of an offensive weapon or wear any apparel calculated to intimidate voters.

2. No one is allowed to use a vehicle bearing the colour or symbol of a political party or candidate

3. No one is allowed to loiter at polling units without lawful excuse after voting or after being refused to vote.

4. No one is allowed to snatch or destroy any election materials and no one is allowed to blare siren.
