Manchester City face a possible ban from next season's Champions League, Europe in 2020

Image
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City could find themselves banned from Europe in 2020, Guardiola has never spent longer than four consecutive seasons in charge of any one club A season outside of the Champions League can prove disastrous for many clubs on a financial level. City would lose a sizeable chunk of income without European football. In the 2017-18 season they received more than £57m in prize money alone. The figure for the season just gone will have been more again. That is a drop in the ocean for City's owners, who under expulsion from the tournament would technically be able to put more of their own money into the club for that season. It is reportedly part of the reason why Milan are currently negotiating their own ban from the Europa League for the coming campaign. However, City would have to be careful to avoid then breaking Premier League FFP rules. These are more lenient that UEFA's - allowing clubs to lose up to £100m over the course of three seaso

Trump said he enjoyed a "very, very good relationship" with Putin, and said "many positive things are going to come out of the relationship." In the seven months since Trump last encountered his Russian counterpart, the Russians detained a former Marine on espionage charges and were accuse

A delicious World Cup discovery: SOCCER BREAD

Image
The balls originated as a collaboration between the French sculptor César Baldaccini and Apollonia’s father, Lionel Poilâne, during the run up to the 1998 World Cup, hosted in, and eventually won by, France. One of César’s enormous metal sculptures stands close to the bakery on Rue du Cherche-Midi, a centaur-like man with — clear as day — two big metal balls dangling from his horse end. It’s clear that Poilâne is a place that welcomes artists; in the office just off the front room, paintings of Poilâne’s bread line three of the four walls, starting around waist-high and stretching to the tall ceiling. The fourth wall is dominated by an elaborately detailed frosted glass window allowing anyone in the back office to peek out and see the customers lined up for the day. Pierre Poilâne, Apollonia’s grandfather, used to let art students barter the paintings for his bread, although today many artists simply send in paintings and sculptures gratis, inspired by the quality of Poilâne’s bread

A delicious World Cup discovery: SOCCER BREAD

Image
Soccer is the food of life in more ways than one. The goods arrayed in the window of Poilâne’s unassuming little storefront in the sixth arrondissement are typical of what you’ll find at any bakery in Paris: pains au chocolat, tartes aux pommes, small shortbread cookies called punitions. But proudly set out on a green turf mat, next to 11 cookies arranged in a 3-4-3, sits the real pièce de résistance: a full-sized regulation soccer ball, complete with light and dark panels, and made of nothing but bread. The store has been there since 1932 and has seen the neighborhood gentrify, the buildings transforming from monasteries and convents to a row of fashionable shops and eateries. Inside, the front room is tiny but warm, large enough for maybe a dozen people to crowd in if they don’t mind some uncomfortable touching between strangers. To the right, more punitions, along with smaller sliced loaves and jars of jam. To the left, several rows of enormous sourdough rounds, the top shelve

It was not immediately clear whether the shooting was religiously motivated, a settling of scores, or motivated by other unknown factors, Recappe told Reuters. Police have urged people to remain 'prudent'.

Oil prices drop as traders wait for G20, OPEC+ meetings

Image
Oil rig Oil prices fell on Thursday to erase some of the previous session’s strong gains, as traders wait for the G20 summit in Japan and for a meeting of OPEC and other crude producers to decide on an extension of output cuts. Brent crude futures were down 42 cents, or 0.6 per cent, at 66.07 dollars by 0658 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down 33 cents, or 0.6 per cent, at 59.05 dollars. Oil prices rose more than 2 per cent on Wednesday to their highest in about a month, buoyed by U.S. government data showing a larger-than-expected drawdown in crude stocks as exports hit a record-high and surprise drops in refined product stockpiles. However, traders said concerns that a hoped-for breakthrough on trade at the G20 may not eventuate and some nervousness about continued output cuts were crimping follow-through buying. “Investors are split as what to expect from the G20, a positive reset to trade talks … could do wonders in the short-term for the

Uganda 1-1 Zimbabwe: Both teams missing outrageous open goals

Image
Uganda and Zimbabwe played out a 1-1 draw at the Africa Cup of Nations, but both teams will walk away very disappointed not to take all three points. The stalemate leaves Uganda on four points from their opening two games, while Zimbabwe have it all to do heading into the final group game with just one point. Uganda got off to the perfect start on Wednesday through Okwi, who tapped home from close range after Zimbabwe goalkeeper George Chigova parried Lumala Abdu's shot. But they were pegged back through Zimbabwe midfielder Billiat following fine work down the left wing from team-mate Ovidy Karuru. However, the state of play could have been very different if both teams had their goalscoring boots on in Cairo. With the scoreline at 1-1 in the 50th minute, Zimbabwe's Musona missed an absolute sitter to put his side ahead, smashing the ball straight onto the crossbar while unmarked from a few yards out. If you thought that was crazy enough, there was almost a carbo

Egypt 2-0 DR Congo: Mohamed Salah and Ahmed Elmohamady net in first half.

Image
Ahmed Elmohamady and Mohamed Salah fired Egypt into the last-16 of the Africa Cup of Nations with a goal each in a 2-0 win against DR Congo. Yannick Bolasie went closest to breaching the Egypt defence when his fiercely-struck free-kick curled narrowly wide in the closing stages. Egypt managed to put the damaging news of Amr Warda behind them on Wednesday night. It emerged earlier on Wednesday that Egypt had removed striker Amr Warda from their Africa Cup of Nations squad after he was accused of sexual harassment by a number of women. The Egyptian-British model Merhan Keller alleged that Warda, 25, had sent her inappropriate and aggressive messages. Keller then followed up her claims by sharing testimonies from a number of other women who'd contacted her saying they too received unwanted messages from the footballer. But they did not have it all their own way against DR Congo, who twice hit the woodwork. Marcel Tisserand crashed his effort against the woodwork from

Nigeria have become the first team to book their place in AFCON last-16 stage

Image
Nigeria's six points guarantees progress to the last 16 after a major improvement in their form from the opening game of the tournament. Nigeria changed their approach and sought to use the flanks with Simon on the right wing and Ahmed Musa on the left among five changes to the starting line-up made by coach Gernot Rohr. The impact was almost immediate as Simon beat his marker to deliver an inviting square pass inside the second minute, but Alex Iwobi hesitated and the chance was lost. Musa then gave notice of the threat he might pose with a surging run and delivery from which Odion Ighalo could have scored had his first touch not allowed the ball to bounce away from him. Simon got away again down the right just after the half-hour mark, with Ighalo galloping up in tandem. Simon did not deliver the pass, however, and chose to go on his own instead, hitting the side netting from a tight angle. After the break, Iwobi's shot forced a save from Guinea goalkeeper Ibra

The suspects were scheduled to be paraded before journalists at the DHQ Garrison in Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, yesterday. The parade was later postponed due to what officials of the DHQ described as “some unforeseen hitches.” It would be recalled that the Nigerian Police Force had in December 2018 paraded five suspects linked to the murder.
